NHL Short Notes

THREE HARD LAPS

* Brad Marchand scored in overtime to help Boston earn its fourth straight comeback win, all of which coming on the road. Only one team in NHL history has posted a longer such run: Hartford (5 GP in 1995-96).

* Jake Muzzin assisted on three of four Maple Leafs goals as Toronto registered its second point streak of nine-plus games in as many seasons.

* The Lightning, winners of six straight, and Panthers are set to contest their first three of eight head-to-head matchups slated for the 2020-21 regular season.

MARCHAND SCORES OT WINNER AS BRUINS EARN RARE FRANCHISE FEAT
Charlie McAvoy assisted on Brad Marchand’s overtime winner as the Bruins extended their point streak to nine games (8-0-1) and collected their fourth consecutive comeback win.

* Boston trailed 1-0 in the first period and has recorded four straight comeback wins, all of which coming on the road, for the first time in franchise history. Only one team in NHL history has posted a longer such run: Hartford (5 GP from Jan. 31 – Feb. 11, 1996).

* Marchand, who extended the League’s longest active point streaks to nine games dating to Jan. 21 (7-6—13 in 9 GP), scored his 16th career regular-season overtime goal and moved into a tie for fifth on the NHL’s all-time list.

* McAvoy collected his 10th helper of the season to also extend his assist/point streak to eight games (1-10—11 in 8 GP). Only one Bruins defenseman in the last 35 years has posted a run of at least that length: Ray Bourque (6x; last: 8 GP in 1995-96).

MAPLE LEAFS OUST CANADIENS IN SCOTIA NORTH DIVISION SHOWDOWN
After Montreal’s Josh Andersonopened the scoring for the Canadiens 1:16 into the contest, Jake Muzzin (0-3—3) factored on three of four Maple Leafs goals to help Toronto win a showdown between the top two teams in the Scotia North Division.

* Toronto joined Boston in extending the League’s longest active point streak to nine games (both 8-0-1). After the Maple Leafs strung together a 10-game run in 2019-20 (9-0-1), they have now posted a point streak of nine-plus contests in consecutive seasons for the fourth time in franchise history and first since 1992-93 (10 GP) - 1993-94 (10 GP, 11 GP).

DID YOU KNOW?
Wednesday marked just the third time in the last 50 years in which the NHL’s schedule showcased just Original Six clubs (min. 2 GP). The others: Feb. 5, 2020 (TOR at NYR; BOS at CHI) and Oct. 3, 1991 (NYR at BOS; TOR at MTL; DET at CHI).

INTRASTATE RIVALS TO SQUARE OFF IN SUNRISE
The Lightning (9-1-1, 19 points) and Panthers (7-1-2, 16 points), who have the highest and second-highest points percentage in the Discover Central Division standings, respectively, are set to battle at BB&T Center (7 p.m. ET on SUN, FS-F). With each club owning just one regulation loss in 2020-21, Thursday marks the fifth time that the clubs will meet as the top two teams in their division (also Feb. 14, 2004, March 6, 2004, Jan. 23, 2016 and March 26, 2016).

* Tampa Bay owns the highest goal differential in the NHL this season (+22), with Steven Stamkos (7-7—14 in 11 GP) accounting for seven of the team’s 42 goals and Andrei Vasilevskiy owning a 1.80 goals-against average through 10 appearances.

* Florida is led in scoring by franchise stalwarts Jonathan Huberdeau (4-10—14 in 10 GP) and Aleksander Barkov (4-7—11 in 10 GP) as well as offseason addition Patric Hornqvist (6-4—10 in 10 GP). It marks the fourth season in which three or more Panthers players averaged at least one point per game through the team’s first 10, following 1995-96, 1999-00 and 2017-18.

LAMORIELLO CLOSES IN ON 1,300TH WIN; HEXTALL AIMS FOR FIRST WITH PENGUINS
Lou Lamoriello can earn his 1,300th career regular-season win as an NHL general manager when the Islanders host the Penguins at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum (7 p.m. on ESPN+, ATTSN-PT, MSG+, SNP, SN360). He would become the third in League history to reach the milestone, joining David Poile (1,420) and Glen Sather (1,319).

* Thursday is set to mark Pittsburgh’s first game since naming Ron Hextall general manager and Brian Burke president of hockey operations. Hextall had a record of 165-128-58 (388 points) in 351 regular-season games at the helm with the Flyers for parts of five seasons from 2014-15 to 2018-19.
