NHL Short Notes

THREE HARD LAPS

* Travis Konecny continued to find the score sheet with his 23rd birthday now less than a week away.

* The Flames rallied past the Blue Jackets via late goals in regulation and overtime.

* Rickard Rakell also scored in the dying seconds of extra time – which was tied for the second-latest overtime goal in Ducks history.

FLYERS EXTEND WIN STREAK, MOVE WITHIN ONE POINT OF CAPITALS
Travis Konecny (1-0—1) and Ivan Provorov (1-1—2) combined for two of five Philadelphia goals to help the Flyers defeat the Metropolitan Division-leading Capitals and extend their season-high win streak to seven games. Philadelphia, which occupies second in the Metropolitan Division standings, improved to 39-20-7 (85 points) overall this season and moved within one point of first-place Washington (40-20-6, 86 points).

* Konecny, who turns 23 on March 11, leads the team in scoring this season (24-37—61 in 63 GP) and has amassed 185 career regular-season points (83-102—185 in 296 GP). With five points over the Flyers’ three games before Wednesday, Konecny would match Bobby Clarke (77-113—190 in 231 GP) for the sixth-most by a Philadelphia player at age 22 or younger.

* Clarke, currently a senior advisor for the club, is one of seven different players in franchise history age 23 or younger to lead the Flyers in points at the conclusion of a season (outright or tied).

* Philadelphia defensemen have combined for 43 goals this season (43-109—152 in 66 GP) – including 12 by Provorov (12-23—35 in 66 GP) – edging Montreal (42-84—126 in 68 GP) for the highest such total among all teams.

PACIFIC DIVISION TEAMS PICK UP WINS
Pacific Division teams swept the remaining three games on Wednesday’s slate – all in come-from-behind fashion:

* Matthew Tkachuk scored a game-tying goal with 1:43 remaining in regulation and TJ Brodie tallied with 10.4 seconds left in overtime as the Flames overcame a 2-0 third-period deficit to rally past the Blue Jackets. Calgary improved to 35-26-7 (77 points) this season and strengthened its grip on third place in the Pacific Division standings.

* Nick Schmaltz tied the game with 9:50 remaining in regulation and Lawson Crouse scored the go-ahead goal 2:29 later as the Coyotes improved to 3-1-0 in their last four contests. Arizona (33-27-8, 74 points) matched idle Winnipeg (34-28-6, 74 points) – which occupies the final Wild Card spot in the Western Conference standings – in terms of points; the Jets, however, own one more regulation win (WPG: 27, ARI: 26).

* Rickard Rakell (1-1—2) tallied with 1.2 seconds remaining in overtime to snap a 15-game goal drought and power the Ducks past the Avalanche. Rakell became the third player in franchise history to score at 4:58 or later in a regular-season overtime period, joining Peter Douris on Nov. 17, 1995 (4:59) and Corey Perry on Jan. 5, 2014 (4:58).

DID YOU KNOW?
The Flames’ rally marked the 43rd instance in 2019-20 of a team overcoming a multi-goal third-period deficit to win a game. That’s just six shy of the most through an entire regular season in NHL history – with 240 games still remaining in 2019-20.

PREVIEW OF TODAY’S ACTION

PAGEAU RETURNS TO OTTAWA FOR FIRST TIME SINCE TRADE TO ISLANDERS
Jean-Gabriel Pageau is set to return to Ottawa for the first time since being traded by the Senators to the Islanders on Feb. 24. Pageau, a fourth-round pick (96th overall) by Ottawa in the 2011 NHL Draft, played for the Senators from 2012-13 to 2019-20 – accumulating 182 regular-season points in 428 games (87-95—182).

* In perhaps his most memorable moment as a Senator, Pageau scored four goals versus the Rangers in Game 2 of the 2017 Second Round – including the double-overtime winner to cap a natural hat trick (6-5 2OT W). He established a franchise record for most goals in a Stanley Cup Playoffs game and became just the sixth Senators player to score four times in any contest, joining Marian Hossa on Jan. 2, 2003 (4-1—5 vs. ATL), Dany Heatley on Oct. 29, 2005 (4-0—4 at TOR), Daniel Alfredsson on Nov. 2, 2005 (4-2—6 at BUF), Martin Havlat on Nov. 2, 2005 (4-0—4 at BUF) and Alex Kovalev on Jan. 3, 2010 (4-1—5 vs. PHI).
