NHL Short Notes

THREE HARD LAPS

* Matthew Tkachuk scored a between-the-legs goal in the dying seconds of overtime as the Flames overcame a multi-goal, third-period deficit to win a Halloween thriller against the Predators.

* Max Domi scored his first career overtime goal as the Canadiens stunned the Golden Knights with a third-period rally of their own.

* The 2019-20 season marks just the second in NHL history to feature two multi-goal, third-period comeback wins on consecutive nights after the Lightning and Panthers accomplished the feat Wednesday.

TKACHUK GOES BETWEEN THE LEGS AS FLAMES STUN PREDATORS . . .

After the Flames erased a 4-1 third period deficit and the Predators retook the lead with 1:22 remaining in the final frame, Matthew Tkachuk (2-1—3) helped the Flames tie the game again with 39 seconds left in regulation before going between his legs to net the game winner in the final seconds of overtime.

* The Flames overcame a third-period deficit of three or more goals to win in any fashion for the seventh time in franchise history, while recording their fourth such instance on the road(Last: March 26, 2011 at EDM).

* Two days after Hurricanes forward Andrei Svechnikov shocked the hockey world with a lacrosse-style goal, Tkachuk scored a between-the-legs, highlight-reel goal in the final two seconds of overtime. He joined Eddy Beers (Oct. 30, 1983 vs. VAN) as just the second player in Flames franchise history to score a game-tying goal in the final minute of regulation and a game-winning goal in the final 60 seconds of overtime.

* Johnny Gaudreau recorded two assists, including one on Tkachuk’s game-tying goal, to record his 400th NHL point (136-264—400 in 409 GP). Among players to debut with the Flames franchise, only four required fewer games to record their 400th career point than Gaudreau.

* Mark Giordano collected an assist on Alan Quine’s initial game-tying goal to collect his 10th point of the season (3-7—10 in 15 GP). The 2018-19 Norris Trophy recipient became the fourth Flames defenseman since 1998-99 to collect at least 10 points through his first 15 games in consecutive seasons.

* Calgary became the sixth team to feature at least five players with 10 or more points this season. The 2019-20 campaign marks just the ninth instance in NHL history in which six or more teams completed the month of October with at least five 10-point players (last: Oct. 1993 – 6).

. . . WHILE DOMI CAPS CANADIENS' COMEBACK VEGAS

Meanwhile in Vegas, Jonathan Drouin scored for the third straight game and Max Domi (1-1—2) netted the winner 26 seconds into overtime as the Canadiens overcame a 4-2 third-period deficit to win their third straight game.

* Halloween marked the second straight night in which the NHL featured two third-period, multi-goal comeback wins after the Lightning and Panthers accomplished the feat against the Devils and Avalanche, respectively.

PREVIEW OF TODAY’S ACTION

LIGHTNING, SABRES CONTEST FINAL GAMES BEFORE MEETING IN STOCKHOLM
The Lightning (6-4-2, 14 points) and Sabres (9-2-2, 20 points) are set to contest their final and penultimate games, respectively, before meeting in the 2019 NHL Global Series in Stockholm, Sweden for two head-to-head matchups slated from Nov. 8-9.

* The Lightning travel to NYCB Live/Nassau Coliseum to take on the Islanders (8-3-0, 16 points), winners of seven straight games. Tampa Bay, which scored seven goals in its last outing (7-6 OT W at NJD), has snapped an opponent’s regular-season win streak of seven or more games six times in franchise history – doing so on March 1, 2002 (4-2 W vs. SJS; 7 GP), Feb. 23, 2011 (8-3 W vs. PHX; 8 GP), Feb. 25, 2011 (2-1 W vs. NJD; 8 GP), Nov. 19, 2015 (2-1 W vs. NYR; 9 GP), Jan. 21, 2016 (2-1 W vs. CHI; 12 GP) and Nov. 29, 2018 (5-4 W vs. BUF; 10 GP).

* The Sabres, meanwhile, visit the Capitals (9-2-3, 21 points) at Capital One Arena, who occupy first place in the NHL standings. Buffalo, which trails Washington by one point, can reach the 10-win mark in a season in 14 or fewer games for the third time in franchise history, following 2006-07 (10 GP; 10-0-0) and 1975-76 (13 GP; 10-2-1). Buffalo will then host the Islanders on Saturday before taking off for Stockholm.

MacKINNON LOOKS TO EXTEND SEASON-OPENING POINT STREAK TO 13 GAMES
Nathan MacKinnon (7-10—17 in 12 GP) looks to extend his season-opening point streak to 13 games when the Avalanche (8-2-2, 18 points) host the Stars (5-8-1, 11 points) at Pepsi Center. MacKinnon can become the first player to record at least one point in each of his team’s first 13 or more contests in a season since 2007-08, when Red Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg posted a 17-game run (13-14—27).
