NHL Short Notes

THREE HARD LAPS

* The Canucks benefited from their second five-goal period in seven days to power past the Panthers. They became the 10th team since 1989-90 to score at least 28 goals (including shootout-deciding goals) through their first five home games of a season.

* Conor Garland (1-1—2) played a pivotal role as Arizona earned its second straight multi-goal comeback win. It marked the second time in Coyotes/Jets franchise history that the club has recorded consecutive multi-goal comeback victories.

* Oilers captain Connor McDavid (134-259—393 in 299 GP) is set to appear in his 300th NHL game when Edmonton faces off against Detroit. McDavid already ranks tied for 11th in career points through 300 games played and can add to that total Tuesday.

CANUCKS SCORE EARLY AND OFTEN IN SEVEN-GOAL SHOWING
The Canucks benefited from five first-period goals, including four in the opening 9:35, to extend their season-opening point streak at Rogers Arena to five games (4-0-1). Monday’s contest marked the second time in seven days that Vancouver has scored five goals in a period (third period on Oct. 22 at DET).

* After a third-period hat trick from captain Bo Horvat propelled the Canucks past the Red Wings last week, Vancouver became the fourth team in the past 30 years to post multiple five-goal periods over their first 11 games. Ottawa (Oct. 21 and Oct. 26, 2006), Colorado (Oct. 8 and Oct. 19, 1996) and Boston (Oct. 9 and Oct. 28, 1993) are the only others to accomplish the feat since 1989-90.

* The seven-goal performance boosted the Canucks home goal total to 28, including shootout-deciding tallies (5 GP) - four shy of the highest-such total through the franchise’s first five home games of any season (32 in 1983-84). Additionally, they became the 10th team since 1989-90 to score at least 28 goals through their first five games as the host.

* Vancouver scored five or more goals in three consecutive games for the third time in 20 years, while also reaching the total in each of their last three games at Rogers Arena. The Canucks last scored at least five goals in three straight home games from Dec. 1-6, 2011.

* Elias Pettersson (0-3—3) factored on three of seven goals to boost his career totals to 31-49—80 in 82 GP. Among players to debut with the Canucks, only Pavel Bure (49-31—80 in 80 GP) required fewer games than Pettersson to record his 80th career point with the franchise.

COYOTES WIN AFTER RALLYING FROM ANOTHER MULT-GOAL DEFICIT
Conor Garland (1-1—2) factored on both goals in regulation and Nick Schmaltz scored the only goal in the shootout as the Coyotes rallied from a multi-goal deficit to hand the Sabres their first home loss of 2019-20. Arizona is the second team in as many days to snap a home unbeaten streak, after Florida did so in Edmonton Sunday.

* Monday’s contest featured the second straight game in which Arizona recorded a multi-goal comeback win, after Barrett Hayton’s first NHL goal helped them do so against New Jersey on Oct. 25. It marked just the second time in Coyotes/Jets franchise history in which they accomplished the feat in consecutive contests. The other: March 18, 2010 (at FLA) and March 20, 2010 (vs. CHI).

* The 2019-20 campaign marks the third time in six seasons a team collected consecutive multi-goal comeback wins, after the Red Wings did so on Nov. 9 (vs NYR) and Nov. 10, 2018 (at CAR), while the Wild accomplished the feat on Oct. 28 (at BOS) and Oct. 30, 2014 (vs. SJS).

* Arizona and Buffalo completed Monday’s overtime period without a stoppage of play. One other contest has featured no stoppages of play in an extra frame this season: Oct. 10 (EDM at NJD). The 2018-19 campaign featured five such contests.

* The Coyotes earned the League’s 26th multi-goal comeback win through 178 GP in 2019-20, trailing only 1986-87 (29) for the most through the first 178 GP of any season in NHL history.

PREVIEW OF TODAY’S ACTION

McDAVID AMONG HEADY COMPANY HEADING INTO 300TH GAME
Connor McDavid
(134-259—393 in 299 GP) is scheduled to skate in his 300th career regular-season game when the Oilers visit the Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena on Tuesday. A two-time Art Ross Trophy winner, McDavid already ranks tied for 11th in career points through 300 games played – he can still add to that total on Tuesday.

* McDavid, who is tied for second in League scoring with 6-15—21 in 12 games this season, is one of seven players in NHL history to capture the Hart Trophy AND the Art Ross Trophy prior to appearing in 300 career regular-season games.

CHARA, MARLEAU AND THORNTON PROVE AGE IS JUST A NUMBER
The three active leaders in career games played – all of whom rank in the top 22 on the all-time list – are scheduled to be on the same ice when Patrick Marleau (1,665 GP), Joe Thornton (1,578 GP) and the Sharks visit Zdeno Chara (1,496 GP) and the Bruins.

* All three players enter the contest at 40 years of age or older (Chara: age 42; Marleau: age 40; Thornton: age 40). The last time three players age 40 or older competed in the same regular-season contest was a March 4, 2014 game between the Devils (Jaromir Jagr: age 42 and Martin Brodeur: age 41) and Red Wings (Daniel Alfredsson: age 41).

* The last regular-season game to see three skaters age 40 or over was Anaheim’s Teemu Selanne (age 42) facing Dallas’ Jagr (age 41) and Ray Whitney (age 40) on April 1, 2013.

* Chara, Marleau and Thornton all continue to be important contributors to their team past their 40th birthday. Chara ranks second on the Bruins in time on ice per game (22:06), behind only 21-year-old blueliner Charlie McAvoy – Chara had played five NHL games before McAvoy was born.

* In San Jose, Marleau has recorded 2-4—6 with a team-high plus-3 rating in eight games since making his season debut on Oct. 10, while Thornton (0-4—4 in 12 GP) has won 54.5% of his faceoffs – the highest percentage on the team among players with 20 or more attempts.
