THREE HARD LAPS

* Red Wings forward Anthony Mantha became the second player in franchise history to score four goals in their home opener and first in nearly 86 years.

* Defensemen accounted for three of four Carolina goals as the Hurricanes improved to 3-0-0 this season, with each win coming past regulation after they rallied from a deficit.

* Barry Trotz was behind the bench for career regular-season game No. 1,608, passing a longtime Islanders head coach on the NHL’s all-time list.

MANTHA SCORES FOUR GOALS AS DETROIT RALLIES TO WIN HOME OPENER
Anthony Mantha scored four goals – including a natural hat trick and the game winner with 53.3 seconds remaining in regulation – as Detroit rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Dallas in its home opener at Little Caesars Arena. Mantha became the second player in Red Wings franchise history to score four goals in their home opener, joining John Sorrell on Nov. 12, 1933 (4-0—4 vs. NYA).



* Aside from Mantha and Sorrell, only four other Detroit players have scored a hat trick in their home opener: Adam Brown on Oct. 28, 1945 (3-0—3 vs. BOS), Brendan Shanahan on Oct. 16, 1998 (3-0—3 vs. STL), Justin Abdelkader on Oct. 9, 2015 (3-0—3 vs. TOR) and Mike Green on Oct. 17, 2016 (3-0—3 vs. OTT). Mantha, Sorrell and Shanahan are the only players to score a natural hat trick in the Red Wings’ first home game in a season.

* Overall, Mantha became the 23rd different player in franchise history to score four or more goals in any regular-season game – a feat last achieved by Johan Franzen on Feb. 2, 2011 (5-0—5 at OTT). The franchise record for most goals in game by a Detroit player is six, held by Syd Howe on Feb. 3, 1944 (6-0—6 vs. NYR).

* Mantha has recorded seven points through the Red Wings’ first two games of the season (5-2—7), following a 1-2—3 outing on Saturday (5-3 W at NSH). Only two players in franchise history have recorded more points through the team’s first two games in a season.

HURRICANES RALLY (AGAIN) TO IMPROVE TO 3-0-0
Erik Haula and Dougie Hamilton (1-1—2) each scored to help Carolina overcome a 3-1 deficit before Jaccob Slavin notched the overtime winner as the Hurricanes defeated the Lightning to improve to 3-0-0 in 2019-20. Carolina, which has rallied from a deficit and required extra time in each contest, won its first three games in a season for the second time in franchise history (also 4-0-0 in 1995-96 as the Hartford Whalers).



* The Hurricanes became the 13th team in NHL history to overcome a deficit to win each of their first three or more games in a season – a feat last achieved by the Lightning and Canucks in 2016-17 (both 3-0-0). Only two teams have done so to win each of their first four contests in a season: Los Angeles in 1988-89 and Nashville in 2005-06.

* Carolina became the third team in League history to improve to 3-0-0 in a season with each game requiring extra time, joining Washington in 2011-12 and Vancouver in 2016-17. No team has ever won each of their first four contests in a season with every game extending past regulation.

* The Hurricanes, who forged a 44-13 shot advantage including a 16-0 mark in the middle frame, held an opponent to zero shots in a regulation period for the fifth time in franchise history and first since Feb. 3, 2004 (3-1 L at COL). Carolina also became the first team in NHL history to hold a reigning Presidents' Trophy winner to no shots in a period during the ensuing regular season.

* Haula, who was acquired on June 27, has scored a goal in each of his first three games with the Hurricanes (3-0—3). He became the sixth player in franchise history to record a season-opening goal streak of three or more games – and the only one to do so in his first season with the Hurricanes/Whalers.



DEFENSEMEN SCORING AT SIGNIFICANT PACE IN 2019-20
Defensemen have accounted for 17.8% of all goals through the first five days of 2019-20 (36 of 202), representing an increase from last season which concluded with 14.9% of all markers scored by blueliners (1,125 of 7,577). The last regular season to finish with defensemen recording 17.8% or more of all goals was 1928-29 (117 of 642; 18.2%), the final NHL campaign to feature no forward passing inside the attacking zone.

TROTZ PASSES ARBOUR FOR THIRD PLACE ON ALL-TIME GAMES COACHED LIST
New York earned its first win of the season as Barry Trotz was behind the bench for his 1,608th career regular-season game as an NHL head coach, passing longtime Islanders skipper Al Arbour for sole possession of third place on the League’s all-time list.

* Across from Trotz was Jets bench boss Paul Maurice, who owns the sixth-most regular-season games in NHL history among head coaches with 1,532 to his credit – 66 back of Ken Hitchcock for fifth place in League annals.

SABRES, KRUEGER LOOK TO REMAIN UNDEFEATED

The Sabres look to improve to 3-0-0 when they visit Nationwide Arena to take on the Blue Jackets (0-2-0), who are aiming to record their first win of 2019-20.

* Buffalo has won each of its first three or more games in a season a total of four times in franchise history, doing so in 1975-76 (8-0-0), 1994-95 (3-0-0), 2006-07 (10-0-0) and 2008-09 (4-0-0). The Sabres’ 10-game run to open 2006-07 matched the NHL record for longest win streak by a team from the start of a season, a mark set by the Maple Leafs in 1993-94.

* Ralph Krueger, who was hired on May 15, can become the first head coach in franchise history to earn wins in each of his first three career games with the Sabres. Scotty Bowman, the winningest head coach in League history, won each of his first three games during his second stint with Buffalo from Jan. 17-22, 1986, but went 2-1-0 to begin his first with the Sabres from Oct. 11-14, 1979.
