NHL MORNING SKATE

HOME TEAMS SWEEP TUESDAY’S SCHEDULE

Home teams swept Tuesday’s schedule and improved to 121-75-27 through 223 games this season (.603).

* It marked the fifth day in NHL history in which home teams swept a slate of at least nine contests, joining March 17, 1996 (9-0-0), Oct. 9, 2003 (9-0-0), Nov. 20, 2003 (9-0-0) and Feb. 28, 2004 (9-0-0). Home teams have never swept a schedule of more than nine games.

ALSO OF NOTE . . .

Tuesday’s nine-game slate also featured a five-point outing, a hat trick and an opening-minute goal.

* There have been four instances of a player recording five points in a game in 2018-19, the highest such total through the first 223 contests in a season since 2009-10 (4x).

* There have been 16 hat tricks in 2018-19, including one in each of the last three days and four in the month November overall. Only one season over the last 20 years has featured more hat tricks through the first 223 games: 2006-07 (17).

* There have been 21 goals scored in the opening minute of games in 2018-19, the highest such total through the first 223 contests in a season since 1992-93 (21). Only three seasons in NHL history have featured more opening-minute goals through 223 games: 1981-82 (35), 1984-85 (26) and 1985-86 (23).

PETTERSSON SCORES 10TH GOAL IN AS MANY GAMES

Canucks forward Elias Pettersson, who made his NHL debut on Oct. 3, scored a highlight-reel goal on Tuesday and leads all rookies in goals and points this season (10-6—16 in 10 GP). He became the fifth player outside of the NHL’s inaugural season to score 10 or more goals through his first 10 career games.

* Pettersson became the 17th player in NHL history to record 16 or more points through his first 10 career games and first since 1992-93, when Dimitri Kvartalnov (10-7—17 w/ BOS) and Nikolai Borschevsky (8-8—16 w/ TOR) accomplished the feat.

STONE RECORDS FIVE POINTS AS SENATORS SCORE SEASON-HIGH SEVEN GOALS

Mark Stone (2-3—5) matched a single-game career high with five points (also 1-4—5 on Feb. 18, 2017 at TOR) as the Senators scored a season-high seven goals to defeat the Devils. He became the fifth player in franchise history to record multiple regular-season games with at least five points, joining Daniel Alfredsson (4x), Marian Hossa (3x), Alexei Yashin (3x) and Jason Spezza (2x).

* Thomas Chabot (1-2—3) leads all defensemen with 20 points in 2018-19 (4-16—20 in 15 GP), the most by a Senators blueliner through the first 15 team games in a season. He became the first defenseman on any team to record 20 or more points through his team’s first 15 games in a season since Brian Leetch in 2000-01 (4-17—21 w/ NYR).

OFFSEASON ACQUISITIONS O'REILLY, DOMI CONTINUE STRONG STARTS

Blues forward Ryan O'Reilly (3-0—3) and Canadiens forward Max Domi (1-0—1) each continued strong starts with their new clubs:

* O’Reilly (7-12—19 in 13 GP) scored his first NHL hat trick and extended his point streak to eight games (7-8—15), matching his career high last achieved from Nov. 28 – Dec. 14, 2015 (4-7—11 w/ BUF). Only three players have recorded more points through their first 13 career games with the Blues: Phil Goyette in 1969-70 (8-15—23), Craig Janney in 1991-92 (4-19—23) and Wayne Babych in 1978-79 (9-11—20).

* Domi extended his goal streak to four games (4-1—5) and boosted his totals to 9-7—16 this season (15 GP). He equaled his goal totals from both 2017-18 (82 GP) and 2016-17 (59 GP) and became the eighth player in the NHL’s modern era (since 1943-44) to score nine or more through his first 15 career games with the Canadiens.

THORNTON APPROACHES TWO MILESTONES

Sharks forward Joe Thornton (1-0—1) skated in the 1,499th regular-season game of his NHL career and moved into a tie with Mike Modano for 19th place on the League’s all-time list. He is set to become the 19th player in League history and the first No. 1 overall pick in the 55-year history of the NHL Draft to reach the 1,500-game milestone.

* Thornton (399-1,031—1,430) scored to move within one goal of reaching 400-goal milestone. He would become the 11th player in NHL history to collect at least 400 career goals and 1,000 career assists.
