LAINE NETS HAT TRICK, OUTDUELS BARKOV AS JETS WIN GLOBAL SERIES OPENER

Patrik Laine (3-0—3) became the second player ever to record a hat trick in a regular-season NHL game played outside North America to outduel fellow countryman Aleksander Barkov (0-1—1) and lead the Jets past the Panthers in front of a sellout crowd of 13,490 at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland. The teams will face off again today at 2 p.m. ET in the third and final NHL Global Series game of 2018-19 (also Oct. 6: NJD 5, EDM 2).

* Entering the game with three goals in 12 games this season, Laine scored two tie-breaking goals before completing his fifth career hat trick into the empty net. The 20-year-old, Tampere, Finland native already shares fifth in career hat tricks among Finnish-born players, behind Olli Jokinen (7),Tomas Sandstrom (8), Teemu Selanne (22) and Jari Kurri (23).

* The only other hat trick in a game played outside North America came more than 20 years ago, when Theo Fleury (3-2—5) factored on all five Flames goals in a 5-3 victory against the Sharks at Yoyogi Arena in Tokyo, Japan - the fourth regular-season NHL game ever contested outside North America.

* Laine became the 18th player to score multiple goals in a game overseas, and third to do so this season following Devils teammates Kyle Palmieri and Travis Zajac.

* Laine was one of three Jets to collect three points Thursday, with captain Blake Wheeler and defenseman Dustin Byfuglien posting three assists apiece. The Jets became the second team to have multiple players with three or more points in a game overseas. Half of the 10 three-point games posted outside North America have come in Helsinki.

* Byfuglien now has 2-4—6 in three games overseas, with all those points coming in Helsinki and against the Panthers (also 2 GP w/ CHI in 2009-10). He is the only defenseman to record three points in a regular-season game played outside North America.

PANTHERS TRIO CONTINUE STRONG STARTS

The Panthers tied the game twice with help from a high-scoring blueliner and two streaking forwards:

* Defenseman Keith Yandle (2-8—10) scored to match a franchise record for points by a defenseman through the team’s opening 10 games of a season (Keith Ballard: 2-8—10 in 2008-09).

* Forward Evgenii Dadonov scored to extend his career-high point streak to seven games (4-4—8). He leads the team with 5-6—11 in 10 games, notching points in eight of those contests.

* Offseason acquisition Mike Hoffman (5-3—8 in 8 GP), assisted on Yandle’s goal to match the longest point streak of his career (also 3-8—11 in 8 GP last season). It marks the longest point streak by a first-year Panthers player.

CANADIENS SET NHL RECORD, RALLY PAST DEFENDING CUP CHAMPS

Jesperi Kotkaniemi netted his first two NHL goals, with the second tying the game at 16:56 of the third period, before Max Domi tallied the winning marker with 21.8 seconds left in regulation to complete Montreal’s comeback against Washington. Joel Armia scored into an empty net two seconds after Domi’s goal, establishing an NHL record for fastest two goals by one team.

* Domi (6-6—12), acquired the by Canadiens on June 15, found the back of the net for the fourth time in his last four contests and is averaging one point per game through his first 12 games with the club. His tally marked the second-latest go-ahead goal in the NHL this season, behind teammateBrendan Gallagher, who broke a 2-2 deadlock with 10.5 seconds left against the Blues on Oct. 17.

* At 18 years, 118 days, Kotkaniemi (Pori, Finland) became the youngest player born outside North America to score at least two goals in a game, edging Winnipeg’s Patrik Laine who scored three goals at age 18 years, 183 days on Oct. 19, 2016.

* Kotkaniemi also became the second-youngest player in franchise history to score his first career NHL goal, behind Mario Tremblay (18 years, 75 days) on Nov. 16, 1974.

* Did You Know? Kotkaniemi became the fourth member of the top four from the 2018 NHL Draft to score a goal in 2018-19. The last season in which each of the top four picks scored a goal in the campaign immediately following their draft was 2009-10, when John Tavares, Victor Hedman,Matt Duchene and Evander Kane combined for the feat.

* Teenagers have accounted for 28 goals through 191 contests in 2018-19, the fourth straight season in which teenagers accounted for at least 25 goals through as many games.

FIVE-GOAL OUTBURST SPARKS FLAMES THIRD-PERIOD RALLY
Trailing 4-1 entering the third period, the Flames benefited from a five-goal outburst to rally to victory and improve to 3-0-1 in their last four contests.

* Calgary overcame a three-goal deficit in the third period to win for the sixth time in franchise history. However, Thursday marked only the second time in which they staged such a rally to win in regulation - the first instance came nearly 40 years ago, on Dec. 31, 1978 at NYR.

* Johnny Gaudreau collected an assist on James Neal’s tying goal and has now collected 6-11—17 in 14 games this season. He is just the secondFlames player since 1992-93 to post consecutive seasons with at least 17 points through his team’s first 14 contests, joining Jarome Iginla (2007-08 and 2008-09).

* Through 191 GP this season, there have been 19 instances of teams have combined for at least 10 goals, the most through 191 GP since the 1995-96 campaign (27).

BEHIND THE NUMBERS: THREE-GOAL COMEBACKS

Calgary’s win was the third game this season - and second time in three nights (also Oct. 30: DET at CBJ) - that a team overcame a three-goal, third-period deficit to at least even the score. The Flames became the second team to complete such a comeback this season, following the Oilers on Oct. 16 at WPG.

* In 2017-18, 11 teams rallied from a deficit of three or more goals in the third period to at least even the score (4-1-6), with the Bruins standing as the only team to complete the comeback in regulation (Mar 13 vs. CAR).

PREDATORS REACH 10-WIN MARK, ESTABLISH FRANCHISE RECORD
The reigning Presidents’ Trophy-winning Predators received goals from four different players to defeat the Lightning - the top team in the Eastern Conference from 2017-18 - and become the first team to record 10 wins in 2018-19 (10-3-0). Nashville set a franchise record for fewest games to reach the 10-win mark in a season (13 GP), besting the previous mark of 15 games achieved three times (2005-06, 2006-07 and 2014-15).

* The Predators also improved to 6-0-0 on the road in 2018-19, extending a franchise record. Only six teams in NHL history have posted longer road win streaks to start a season. Nashville plays its next road game Nov. 7 in Colorado; the Maple Leafs are the only other team without a loss on the road this season (5-0-0), with their next road contest slated for Saturday in Pittsburgh.

LAUREN BOYLE, WIFE OF NEW JERSEY’S BRIAN BOYLE, NAMED HFC AMBASSADOR

The 20th annual Hockey Fights Cancer campaign launched Thursday, with Lauren Boyle – wife of New Jersey Devils forward Brian Boyle – named an official Hockey Fights Cancer ambassador. The trials of cancer are all too familiar for Lauren who has been a major support system for her husband. Brian was diagnosed in September 2017 with chronic myeloid leukemia, a type of bone marrow cancer.
