NHL MORNING SKATE

LIGHTNING STRIKE FOR EIGHT GOALS IN WIN
Powered by Brayden Point’s first career five-point outing (1-4—5), the Lightning scored eight goals in a game for the second time this season to improve to 8-2-1 (17 points) and move into first place in the Atlantic Division.

* The Lightning matched a season high with eight goals, a benchmark also reached on Oct. 13 (8-2 W vs. CBJ). The 2018-19 campaign marks just the third season within the last 25 years to feature six or more instances of a team scoring at least eight goals in a game before the conclusion of October. The other occurrences: 2017-18 (6x) and 2006-07 (7x).

* Point (22 years, 231 days) became the eighth different player in franchise history to record at least five points in a regular-season game and the youngest to do so. Only one player in Lightning history has registered six points in a regular-season contest: Doug Crossman on Nov. 7, 1992 (3-3—6 at NYI).

* Point became the second player to collect five points in a game this season, joining Flyers forward Jakub Voracek on Oct. 10 (2-3—5 at OTT). The 2018-19 campaign marks just the third season within the last 10 years to feature multiple five-point outings before the conclusion of October. The other instances: 2015-16 (Andrei Markov, Evgeny Kuznetsov) and 2009-10 (Ales Hemsky, Dustin Penner, J-P Dumont, Tomas Kaberle).

COYOTES SCORE FIVE, EXTEND WIN STREAK TO FOUR GAMES

Five different skaters found the back of the net and Antti Raanta made 25 saves as the Coyotes defeated the Senators to earn their fourth consecutive win.

* Arizona has combined for 27 goals for over its last six games dating to Oct. 18, the highest total among all teams in that span. The Coyotes scored 27 goals over a six-game span in a regular season for the first time since registering an equal amount from Dec. 30, 2006 – Jan. 9, 2007.

* Raanta improved to 72-44-15 in 149 career appearances (2.28 GAA, .922 SV%, 11 SO). His career save percentage of .922 is tied for the third-highest total among all goaltenders since 1955-56 when shots on goal became an official NHL statistic (min. 100 GP), behind only John Gibson(.924) and Philipp Grubauer (.923).

* Did You Know? Derek Stepan scored his first shorthanded goal of the season and the Coyotes’ fifth such marker over the last three games. Arizona became the first team to score at least five shorthanded goals over a three-game span in a regular season since Chicago notched an equal amount across two contests from Nov. 17-22, 2007.

PASTRNAK, BERGERON KEEP PACE WITH LEADING SCORERS

David Pastrnak (1-0—1) and Patrice Bergeron (0-3—3) each played crucial roles in their team’s offensive output as the Bruins improved to 11-0-5 in its last 16 games against Carolina dating to Nov. 18, 2013 (CAR: 5-6-4), including four straight wins. The Bruins’ franchise record for longest regular-season point streak versus a single opponent is 27 games, a mark set against the Flyers from Nov. 27, 1969 – Feb. 9, 1974 (23-0-4).

* Pastrnak (11-5—16), who moved into a tie with Chicago’s Patrick Kane for most goals in the NHL this season, joined the Blackhawks forward as the second player to score 11 goals through his team’s first 12 contests this season. In 2017-18, Nikita Kucherov (w/ TBL) and John Tavares (w/ NYI) both accomplished the feat. Pastrnak also became the first Bruins player to score 11 goals through his team’s first 12 contest since Dimitri Kvartalnov in 1992-93 (11-9—20).

* In addition to Pastrnak this season, only two other players in Bruins franchise history have tallied more goals in the month of October: Phil Esposito (14 in 1973-74) and Charlie Simmer (12 in 1985-86).

* Bergeron (7-12—19), who trails only Colorado’s Mikko Rantanen (5-16—21) for the most points in 2018-19, became the first Bruins player to record 19 points through the first 12 team games of a season since Adam Oates in 1993-94 (5-14—19).

AHO JOINS GRETZKY AND LINSEMAN, PASSES FRANCIS

Sebastian Aho notched an assist on the game’s opening tally to join Wayne Gretzky (7-20—27 in 1982-83) and Ken Linseman (2-19—21 in 1985-86) as the only players in NHL history to record a season-opening assist streak of 12 games.

* Additionally, the 21-year-old extended his season-opening point streak to 12 contests to surpass Ron Francis’ 11-game run (6-8—14 in 1984-85) for the longest such stretch in Hurricanes/Whalers franchise history.

OTHER STREAKING PLAYERS MAKE THEIR MARK

Multiple other players found their names on the score sheet to continue their impressive starts to 2018-19:

* San Jose’s Brent Burns (3-12—15) and Timo Meier (8-5—13) extended their simultaneous point streaks to nine games and sit one contest shy of matching the longest simultaneous point streak in franchise history set by Todd Elik and Pat Falloon (10 GP from Jan. 15 – Feb. 8, 1994).

* Burns also established a Sharks franchise record for the longest point streak by a defenseman. The longest such run by any player in club history is 12 contests, set by Robert Gaudreau in 1992-93 and matched by Jonathan Cheechoo in 2005-06.

* Meier, a Herisau, Switzerland native, became just the second Swiss-born player in NHL history to record a point streak of at least nine contests, joining Predators forward Kevin Fiala (St. Gallen, Switzerland) who accomplished the feat from Dec. 2-21, 2017 (8-4—12 in 9 GP).

* Mikael Granlund (1-1—2) collected an assist on Eric Staal’s game-tying goal before netting the eventual game winner to push his point streak to nine contests (6-6—12 in 9 GP) and help the Wild improve to 6-1-0 in their last seven contests. He now sits three games shy of his franchise-best point streak, set during the 2016-17 season (12 GP from Jan. 12 – Feb. 4, 2017).

* Evgeni Malkin
(1-0—1) has collected at least one point in nine of the Penguins first 10 games, including an active streak of eight consecutive contests to boost his season totals to (6-13—19). Malkin, who led the team in scoring last season (42-56—98 in 78 GP), became the first Penguinsplayer to record at least 19 points in the team’s opening 10 games of a season since Mario Lemieux in 2002-03 (6-17—23).

CHOLOWSKI JOINS RARE COMPANY IN RED WINGS HISTORY
Despite surrendering a 3-0 lead in the third period, Tyler Bertuzzi netted the eventual game-winning goal to lift the Red Wings to their second win in as many contests. Tuesday’s game marked just the second instance in the last 10 seasons that Detroit has surrendered a lead of at least three goals and won in regulation (March 30, 2010 vs. EDM).

* Dennis Cholowski collected an assist on Bertuzzi’s tally to boost his totals to 2-5—7 through the first 10 games of his NHL career. He became the fourth defenseman in franchise history to record at least seven points through his first 10 career NHL games (all w/ DET), joining Clem Loughlin in 1926-27 (5-2—7), Per Djoos in 1990-91 (0-8—8) and Nicklas Lidstrom in 1991-92 (1-6—7).

* Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane (11-7—18 in 12 GP) enters Tuesday’s action tied with Bruins David Pastrnak for the NHL lead in goals and tied for the fourth-most points. He is one of three Blackhawks players since 1989-90 to record at least 19 points in the team’s opening 13 games of a season, tallying 9-11—20 in 13 GP in 2012-13. The others: Steve Larmer in 1990-91 (10-10—20) and Jeremy Roenick in 1993-94 (9-10—19).

HAT TRICK-OR-TREAT

There have been 21 hat tricks scored on Halloween, including two four-goal performances: Wayne Gretzky (4-1—5) with the Oilers in 1981 against the Nordiques and Kevin Dineen (4-1—5) with the Flyers in 1993 against the Blackhawks.

* The first Halloween hat trick was scored by Detroit’s Frank Mahovlich in 1968 against the Bruins; the last was scored by Calgary’s Michael Frolikin 2015 against the Oilers.

* Stan Smyl is the only Canucks player to score a hat trick on Halloween, collecting 3-2—5 in 1981 against the Flyers. His five points in that game are tied for the second-most ever on Oct. 31. No Chicago player has scored a hat trick on Halloween.
