NHL Morning Skate

GOALS GALORE
The six teams in action on Sunday combined for 32 goals across three games (10.67 G/GP). The total was seven shy of the NHL record for most goals on a three-game day (39), a mark set on March 17, 1946.

SVECHNIKOV POTS FIRST TALLY IN HURRICANES’ EIGHT-GOAL OUTBURST
Carolina overcame deficits of 2-0, 3-2, 4-3 and 5-4 before Andrei Svechnikov (1-1—2) scored the game-winning goal with 9:16 remaining in regulation en route to an 8-5 win. Carolina – which scored eight goals in a game for the first time since March 13, 2017 (8-4 W at NYI) – extended its season-opening point streak to three contests (2-0-1).

* Svechnikov (18 years, 195 days), born March 26, 2000, became the first player born in the 2000s to score an NHL goal. Only two players in Hurricanes/Whalers history scored their first career goal at a younger age: Jeff Skinner (18 years, 157 days) on Oct. 20, 2010 and Paul Lawless (18 years, 181 days) on Dec. 30, 1982.

* Sunday’s game marked the first time in franchise history in which the Hurricanes/Whalers overcame four separate deficits to win in any fashion. Only one team accomplished the feat in 2017-18: Pittsburgh on April 5 (5-4 OT W at CBJ).

DID YOU KNOW?
Andrei Svechnikov
became the third teenager to score at least one goal this season, joining Vancouver’s Elias Pettersson (3) and Anaheim’s Max Comtois (2). The 2018-19 campaign marked the third consecutive year in which teenagers accounted for at least five goals through the first five days of the season.

TAVARES SCORES HAT TRICK IN THRILLING MAPLE LEAFS WIN
In another back-and-forth, high-scoring game, the Maple Leafs and Blackhawks combined for 12 goals in regulation – including three in the final two minutes – before Morgan Rielly (1-2—3) netted the winner 19 seconds into overtime.

* In his third game since making his Maple Leafs debut on Wednesday, John Tavares (3-0—3) scored the ninth hat trick of his NHL career. He became the fourth Maple Leafs player in the NHL’s modern era (since 1943-44) to score a hat trick within his first three games with the franchise, joining Miroslav Frycer in 1981-82, Jeff O'Neill in 2005-06 and Auston Matthews in 2016-17.

* Auston Matthews (2-2—4) matched a career high with four points, a mark he set in his historic four-goal NHL debut on Oct. 12, 2016 at OTT. He has collected at least two points in each of the Maple Leafs’ first three games of 2018-19 (5-3—8 in 3 GP), becoming the seventh player in franchise history to record multiple points in each of the club’s opening three contests.

KOVALCHUK RECORDS FIRST NHL POINTS SINCE 2013
Ilya Kovalchuk
collected two helpers – including one on the game-winning goal – to eclipse the 400-assist milestone and help the Kings pick up their first win of the season. The assists were his first NHL points since April 25, 2013.

* Kovalchuk returned to the NHL when he signed with the Kings on June 23. The 35-year-old is one of eight active NHL players who have played a minimum of 100 contests and average at least one point per game (417-401—818 in 818 GP).
