TOEWS HAT TRICK LEADS BLACKHAWKS TO ANOTHER OT WIN

Jonathan Toews (3-0—3) completed the first hat trick by any player this season and the fifth of his career with an overtime winner to help the Blackhawks improve to 2-0-0 this season - with both victories coming in overtime. This marks just the third time in NHL history that a team has opened a season with back-to-back overtime wins.

* Toews, the franchise leader in regular-season overtime goals (11), became the fifth Blackhawks player to complete a hat trick with an overtime winner joining Jeff Hamilton (Dec. 2, 2006), Tyler Arnason (Mar. 19, 2004), Eric Daze (Dec. 31, 2001) and Curt Fraser (Dec. 13, 1986). Last season, four players across the NHL capped a hat trick with an overtime tally.

PALMIERI, ZAJAC SPARK DEVILS TO GLOBAL SERIES WIN IN SWEDEN
Kyle Palmieri and Travis Zajac each scored twice to lead the Devils to a victory over the Oilers at the 2018 NHL Global Series at Scandinavium in Gothenburg, Sweden.

* The contest marked New Jersey’s first win at a regular-season neutral-site game since March 27, 1994, when they defeated Quebec 5-2 at Target Center in Minneapolis, Minn. The Devils improved to 3-3-1 all-time in regular-season games played at neutral sites while the Oilers fell to 1-5-1 in those contests.

* Palmieri and Zajac became the first set of teammates to each score multiple goals in the same regular-season contest played outside of North America. Only one player in NHL history has recorded a hat trick in such contests - Flames forward Theo Fleury registered 3-2—5 on Oct. 10, 1998 vs. SJS at Yoyogi Arena in Tokyo, Japan.

* Palmieri’s opening tally came just 58 seconds into the contest. Only three of the 29 regular-season games played outside of North America have seen a goal in the opening minute of regulation.

* Saturday’s contest marked the 29th time the NHL has staged a regular-season game at a venue outside of North America, with two more scheduled for 2018-19 as part of the 2018 NHL Global Series. The Jets and Panthers will meet for back-to-back games at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland Nov. 1-2.

WATCH: Hockey Hall of Fame goaltender Martin Brodeur, the NHL’s all-time wins leader, was on hand for the ceremonial puck drop which included a pair of Swedish-born players: Marcus Johansson (NJD) and Adam Larsson (EDM). Click the photo to watch the entire ceremony.

LAST SEASON’S CONFERENCE CHAMPS REMAIN PERFECT

Last season’s Eastern Conference champion Lightning recorded a win in their season-opening game while the Western Conference champion Predators improved to 2-0-0 to start the 2018-19 season.

*J.T. Miller and Nikita Kucherov scored in a shootout to lift the Lightning to their fifth consecutive win in a season-opening game, matching the Canucks - who extended their win streak in season-openers to five games on Wednesday - for the League’s longest active streak in such contests. By earning another two points Saturday, the Lightning continued to build on the NHL’s all-time best points percentage in season-opening contests (26-17-9, .692).

* The Predators, who captured their first Presidents’ Trophy in 2017-18 while setting franchise marks for wins and points (53-18-11, 117 points), improved to 2-0-0 this season behind a multi-goal effort from Viktor Arvidsson (2-0—2). Arvidsson has led Nashville in goals in each of the last two seasons (31 in 2016-17; tied and 29 in 2017-18).

CANUCKS’ PETTERSSON CONTINUES TO SHINE

After scoring an impressive goal in his NHL debut Wednesday, Canucks rookie Elias Pettersson (2-1—3) found the back of the net twice Saturday. He became the sixth player in franchise history to score at least one goal in each of his first two career NHL games and first since Rick Lanz (Oct. 10 and 12, 1980).

* With five points (3-2—5) through two contests, Pettersson joined Thomas Gradin (4-1—5 in 1978-79) as the only rookies in Canucks franchise history to record at least five points through their first two NHL games. Additionally, since 1990-91, only six other rookies have accomplished the feat.

A MILESTONE NIGHT
A trio of veterans, Blues forward Alexander Steen, Stars forward Jamie Benn and Penguins defenseman Kris Letang all reached significant milestones on Saturday:

* Steen appeared in his 900th career NHL game. His father, Thomas Steen, skated in 950 career NHL games with the original Winnipeg Jets from 1981-95. Only three father/son duos in NHL history have each appeared in 900 or more regular-season games.

* Benn, skating in his 669th career game, became the fifth player to record 600 points with the franchise. The fastest to accomplish the feat was Hall of Fame forward Dino Ciccarelli, who recorded 600 points in his first 542 games with the Minnesota North Stars.

* Letang (98-343–441) garnered an assist on the Penguins’ only goal to surpass Hockey Hall of Fame member Paul Coffey (108-332—440) for themost points by a defenseman in franchise history. Prior to Saturday, Coffey had held the mark for 27 years.
