TEAM FINLAND MEETS TEAM USA AT VERIZON CENTER
The World Cup of Hockey pre-tournament schedule resumes on Tuesday night when Team Finland faces Team USA at Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. There are three Capitals players on Team USA – John Carlson, Matt Niskanen and T.J. Oshie – more representatives than any other NHL team on the American roster.
* Team USA is 1-1 in pre-tournament action after splitting back-to-back games against Team Canada. On Friday, Sept. 9, Team USA secured a 4-2 victory on home soil at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, followed by a 5-2 loss to Canada on Saturday, Sept. 10, at Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa. Patrick Kane (1-2—3) and Derek Stepan (1-2—3) lead Team USA in scoring through two pre-tournament games.
* Team Finland also holds a 1-1 record through two pre-tournament games, both versus rival Team Sweden. Defenseman Olli Maatta scored at 4:17 of overtime on Thursday, Sept. 8, to lead Team Finland to a 3-2 win at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland. On Saturday, Sept. 10, Finland fell 6-3 to Team Sweden at Scandinavium in Gothenburg, Sweden. Captain Mikko Koivu leads Team Finland in scoring with 1-2—3 after two exhibition games.
