How the New World Test Championship Points System Works

08/25/2021 at 6:10am EDT

The second ICC World Test Championship is scheduled to begin on August 4, 2021. It's a two-year tournament during which an indisputable World Test champion is crowned, and a title decider (showcase game) that rounds off the league schedule. New Zealand was the last team to win it after beating India in the final of the tournament in June of 2021. This year's competition is going to be slightly different, however, as a new points system has been introduced. In this article, I will talk about the new changes so that you know what to expect.

Who Are The Different Teams Taking Part?

India, New Zealand, Australia, England, Pakistan, South Africa, West Indies, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh all qualified for the tournament.

Who Is The Favorite To Win The ICC World Test Championship?

India has been doing so for a while now, with many of its rising talents stepping up regularly. The team's battling spirit has grown thanks to the captain, Virat Kohli, and it boasts a nice blend of experienced batters and bowlers. India is likely to win the second edition of the event because of this. Currently, there is a special bet calculators available that provides enhanced odds if you fancy a punt.

How Did The Old Points System Work?

A new scoring system has been developed for the second World Tour Championship. For each test series in the 2019-2021 cycles, the point total is 120, with the points divided equally across all of the matches. Because of the COVID outbreak, it was decided that the rankings would be calculated based on the points available.

How Does the New Points System Work?

In 2021-23, test point allotments have been equalized. The number of points scored during each Test match has been adjusted to 12 for a victory, four for a draw, and six for a tie. In a five-test series, a total of 60 points are available, while in a two-test series, a maximum of 24 points is available. To determine the rankings, points must be accumulated.

This method provides for the comparison of team performances throughout the season, regardless of whether a series or match is interrupted. It will also equalize the number of games each side has played.

What To Expect

India and New Zealand will meet in the World Test Championship Final from June 18th to 23rd, 2021, at the Rose Bowl in Southampton, England. The inaugural event started in March 2020, when the country's cricket team faced Australia in the 2019 Ashes series. Matches were halted due to the COVID-19 epidemic in March 2020 and didn't resume until July of the following year. The series between South Africa and Australia was canceled, so New Zealand was the first team to qualify for the final.

How Many Series Are There?

Although each team will only play three WTC series (three series at home and three away), they will play six total WTC series during the cycle.
