from Rosie DiManno of the Toronto Star,
They would not be known as The Dice, The Slots, The Blackjacks and definitely not The Craps.
If this town gets an NHL team, all gambling lingo will be eschewed by the prospective owners. Indeed, majority bid honcho Bill Foley prefers that the formal name of the thus far in-his-dreams franchise not reference Vegas at all but rather fly under the flag of “Nevada” as state-inclusive instead of Sin City specific.
Which seems counter-intuitive because the lure of a team located just off The Strip is very much wrapped up in the flash and dazzle and freewheeling money of Vegas, City of Lost Wages. But gambling, and its byproducts, has always presented a no-go obstacle for the big four North American professional sports leagues, some of which (including the Blue Jays, passim) have dipped a toe in by operating minor-league affiliates here....
The NHL, however, clearly has dollar signs in its eyes about Vegas. Next month, the league will return to the Gambling Capital of America for the sixth time to stage its annual awards night, at the MGM Grand. Simultaneously, the league’s board of governors will hold its meetings there, fueling speculation the NHL might choose that moment to reward a team to the city in the desert: Viva Las Vegas.
Of course, the league is playing its cards close to its vest about adding another team or teams to the NHL roster.
