How is it even possible just four goaltenders who played the bulk of their respective careers following the 1979-80 NHL/WHA merger have been elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame?
How is it even possible just Patrick Roy, Dominik Hasek, Grant Fuhr and Ed Belfour have been deemed worthy of hockey’s highest honor among this generation of netminders by the selection committee, which meets behind closed doors and whose process is shrouded in and clouded by secrecy?
Yes, Martin Brodeur assuredly will make it five when he becomes eligible in 2018, but why has the bar been raised so unaccountably high for goaltenders when it is set at a wholly achievable height for skaters?
By the way, 16 of the 37 enshrined goaltenders played nearly all, if not the entirety, of their careers before World War II. What is that all about?
There is no logical explanation for the continued omission of Curtis Joseph, who is fourth in NHL history with 454 victories and whose postseason reputation was forever burnished with the massive, consecutive Oilers first-round upsets he engineered in 1997 and 1998 over the Stars and Avalanche, respectively.
