from Dan Bickley of the Arizona Republic,
The NHL is in the early stages of a 10-year television deal that pays the league $2 billion, one that expires after the 2020-2021 season. But Doan thinks the numbers are going to get much better in the future, envisioning a day when the local broadcast rights exceed what the entire league currently receives.
That’s why the NHL’s best captain is so happy. He believes in the Coyotes’ front office, the blue line, the system and the goaltender. The stability of new ownership means that he and his teammates are no longer “Coyotes’ apologists,” and no longer “the weird kids on the block.”
He also believes Gosbee and LeBlanc will succeed where others have failed because of the shifting value of television advertising. His bosses aren’t just buying a financially-troubled franchise, thereby inheriting an unsolvable math problem.
They are purchasing a stake in the NHL, at a glorious time to be a sports owner.
“That would be my opinion,” Doan said.
