Blackhawks combine tiered pricing with ticket price increases

08/21/2013 at 4:21pm EDT

The Chicago Blackhawks had already informed the public that their single-game ticket prices would be going up prior to the team's second Stanley Cup championship, and today, the Chicago Tribune's Brian Hamilton reports that the team's introducing a tiered "premium pricing" system as well:

The Blackhawks confirmed to the Tribune that they have increased prices on single-game tickets for the 2013-14 season while creating a second tier of prices for what the club deemed "premier games" based on the date or the opponent.

According to the team, the precise increase on single-game tickets depends on the price level and game but the overall average increase is 17 percent.

Then there are the 12 games on the "premier" tier for 2013-14, which appear to carry an additional $20 to $50 charge per ticket. Those games are as follows:

Oct. 1 vs. the Capitals; Oct. 19 versus the Maple Leafs; Dec. 11 versus the Flyers; Dec. 15 versus the Kings; Dec. 20 versus the Canucks; Dec. 23 versus the Devils; Dec. 27 versus the Avalanche; Dec. 30 versus the Kings; Jan. 8 versus the Rangers; Jan. 19 versus the Bruins; March 16 versus the Red Wings and April 9 against the Canadiens.

In each of those games, the cheapest available seat — thus not counting standing room tickets — is $89.36 with fees and additional taxes.

It sure seems many of the NHL teams are going with this type of ticket plan. A betting man might also agree and It might be worth checking out the odds on upcoming hockey fixtures with sites like bwin.com/en/ice-hockey.

I sure hope these teams are not pricing out the majority of fans and if they are, they realize the mistake that is being made and correct this type of policy.

But they probably now more about their fans than I do.
