NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said Thursday the league has started a formal investigation into former Los Angeles Kings defenseman Slava Voynov 2015 domestic-abuse conviction to determine whether he should be allowed to return to the NHL.
“There were discussions over the course of the summer, including an in-person meeting the player had with Gary (Bettman) where the process started, but not in a formal way,” Daly told USA TODAY Sports. “There were some discussions over the parameters by which he could potentially return, but they didn’t prove fruitful. So we are now engaged in an investigation.”
Daly also said the NHL has completed its investigation into Nashville Predators forward Austin Watson’s no-contest plea to misdemeanor assault for reportedly swatting his girlfriend. He said an announcement of the league's ruling will come before training camp.
