from Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette,
You could almost feel legendary Canadiens goaltender Georges Vézina’s presence Friday afternoon in the suburban home of Phil Schneider.
There was the historic Vézina Trophy, looking much younger than its 89 years, on display in the Montreal defence attorney’s basement shrine.
There were the signed, framed jerseys of Vézina winners Patrick Roy and Carey Price.
And then there was the bleu-blanc-rouge Vézina-nameplated Canadiens jersey, probably a limited edition of one, that Schneider wore to greet guests to his annual holiday-season open house.
The magnificent Vézina Trophy, the NHL’s third-oldest individual prize next to the Hart and Lady Byng, had good company on this day.
The Vézina played one wing to the Stanley Cup, which also was flanked by the William M. Jennings Trophy, since 1981 the NHL’s second annually awarded goaltending award.
Price’s name is freshly engraved on both the Vézina and Jennings, trophies he won last season. He would trade them both, of course, to be tapped into a sterling band on the Stanley Cup.
The three trophies were the centrepiece of Schneider’s open house, an event he’s held for 20 or so years for his law-practice staff, clients and friends.
