All About The First Round Of The 2016 NHL Draft

BUFFALO, N.Y. (June 24, 2016) – Following are notes from the first round of the 2016 NHL Draft, held tonight at First Niagara Center:

MAPLE LEAFS SELECT MATTHEWS FIRST OVERALL

The Toronto Maple Leafs selected forward Auston Matthews (Scottsdale, Ariz.) with the top pick, making him the seventh U.S.-born player to go No. 1 overall in the NHL Draft and the first since 2007:

RECORD-SETTING OPENING ROUND FOR U.S.-BORN PLAYERS

Twelve U.S.-born players were selected in the first round of the draft, an NHL record. Five of those players grew up in the St. Louis area: Matthew Tkachuk (No. 6 overall, CGY), Clayton Keller (No. 7 overall, ARI), Logan Brown (No. 11 overall, OTT), Luke Kunin (No. 15 overall, MIN) and Trent Frederic (No. 29 overall, BOS).

THREE FINNS GO IN TOP FIVE OF DRAFT

Three Finnish players – Patrik Laine (No. 2 overall, WPG), Jesse Puljujarvi (No. 4 overall, EDM) and Olli Juolevi (No. 5 overall, VAN) – were selected with the opening five picks of the draft, a first in NHL history.

TKACHUK, BELLOWS JOIN FATHERS AS FIRST-ROUND SELECTIONS

Matthew Tkachuk (No. 6 overall, CGY) and Kieffer Bellows (No. 19 overall, NYI) joined their fathers – Keith and Brian, respectively – as first-round picks in the NHL Draft. The complete list of father/son duos who have been selected in the opening round of the NHL Draft:

MORE FIRST-ROUND BLOODLINES

* Pierre-Luc Dubois (No. 3 overall, CBJ): His father, Eric, was selected 76th overall by the Quebec Nordiques in the 1989 NHL Draft and currently serves as an assistant coach with the Rimouski Oceanic of the QMJHL.

* Alexander Nylander (No. 8 overall, BUF): His father, Michael, played for seven NHL teams spanning a 920-game, 15-season career. His brother, William, was selected eighth overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs at the 2014 NHL Draft and dressed for 22 games with the club in 2015-16.

* Logan Brown (No. 11 overall, OTT): His father, Jeff, compiled 154-430—584 in 747 career regular-season games over 13 NHL seasons with the Quebec Nordiques, St. Louis Blues, Vancouver Canucks, Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes, Toronto Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals.

* Jake Bean (No. 13 overall, CAR): His father, John, is the chief operating officer for the Calgary Flames.

* Jakob Chychrun (No. 16 overall, ARI): His father, Jeff, played 262 career NHL games as a defenseman with the Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings, Pittsburgh Penguins and Edmonton Oilers. His uncle, Luke Richardson, also patrolled the blue line for 1,417 career NHL games with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Oilers, Flyers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Tampa Bay Lightning and Ottawa Senators.

* Logan Stanley (No. 18 overall, WPG): His cousin, Michael Latta, is a forward with the Washington Capitals.

* Julien Gauthier (No. 21 overall, CAR): His uncle, Denis, was selected 20th overall by the Calgary Flames in the 1995 NHL Draft and played 554 career games for the Flames, Phoenix Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers and Los Angeles Kings from 1997-09.

* Max Jones (No. 24 overall, ANA): His father, Bradley, was drafted 156th overall by the Winnipeg Jets in 1984 and skated in 148 career NHL games with the Jets, Los Angeles Kings and Philadelphia Flyers from 1986-92.

* Tage Thompson (No. 26 overall, STL): His father, Brent, was selected 39th overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1989 NHL Draft and played 121 games over six NHL seasons. He has coached within the New York Islanders organization since 2011-12, currently serving as head coach of their American Hockey League affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

* Brett Howden (No. 27 overall, TBL): His brother, Quinton, was selected 25th overall by the Florida Panthers at the 2010 NHL Draft and has appeared in 92 games with the club spanning three seasons.

* Lucas Johansen (No. 28 overall, WSH): His brother, Ryan, who currently skates for the Nashville Predators, was selected fourth overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets at the 2010 NHL Draft and earned Most Valuable Player honors at the 2015 NHL All-Star Game.

THIS AND THAT

* Three players from the BCHL – Tyson Jost (No. 10 overall, COL), Dante Fabbro (No. 17 overall, NSH) and Dennis Cholowski (No. 20 overall, DET) – were selected in the opening round, a first in NHL Draft history.

* No goaltenders were selected in the first round of the NHL Draft for the third time in the past four years. The only netminder chosen in that span was Ilya Samsonov, picked by the Washington Capitals with the No. 22 selection in 2015.

DAY 1 TRADES

* Montreal traded C Lars Eller to Washington for Washington’s 2nd-round pick in the 2017 and 2018 NHL Drafts.

* Chicago traded Andrew Shaw to Montreal for Montreal’s 2nd-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft (39th overall) and Minnesota’s 2nd-round pick in 2016 (45th overall, previously acquired).

* St. Louis traded G Brian Elliott to Calgary for Calgary’s 2nd-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft (35th overall) and a conditional pick in 2018.

* New Jersey traded its 1st-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft (11th overall) to Ottawa for Ottawa’s 1st-round pick in 2016 (12th overall) and NY Islanders’ 3rd-round pick in 2016 (80th overall, previously acquired).

* Detroit traded C Pavel Datsyuk and its 1st-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft (16th overall) to Arizona for C Joe Vitale, NY Rangers’ 1st-round pick in 2016 (20th overall, previously acquired) and Arizona’s 2nd-round compensatory pick in 2016 (53rd overall).

* Philadelphia traded its 1st-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft (18th overall) and 3rd-round pick in 2016 (79th overall) to Winnipeg for Chicago’s 1st-round pick in 2016 (22nd overall, previously acquired) and Winnipeg’s 2nd-round pick in 2016 (36th overall).

* Washington traded its 1st-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft (26th overall) to St. Louis for St. Louis’ 1st-round pick in 2016 (28th overall) and Washington’s 3rd-round pick in 2016 (87th overall, previously acquired).
