All About Sportsnet's National NHL Broadcasts

TORONTO (August 24, 2016) Sportsnet today announced its 2016-17 NHL national broadcast schedule, featuring more than 300 national games and three main marquee national nights –Hockey Night in Canada on Saturdays, Rogers Hometown Hockey on Sundays, and Scotiabank Wednesday Night Hockey on Wednesdays. Sportsnet’s 2016-17 schedule delivers premium Canadian match-ups chock full of NHL star power. Two outdoor games in Canada headline Sportsnet’s lineup: the 2016 Tim HortonsNHL Heritage Classic in Winnipeg on October 23 and the first-ever NHL Centennial Classic in Toronto on New Year’s Day, which also kicks off the NHL’s yearlong centennial celebration. Two other marquee outdoor games on the 2016-17 schedule include the 2017Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic and the2017 Coors LightNHL Stadium Series.

Sportsnet will deliver comprehensive coverage of the 2017 NHL All-Star Game in Los Angeles and the 17th annual Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada, as well as the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs andStanley Cup Final.

The 2016-17 NHL season opens on Wednesday, Oct. 12, and Sportsnet will broadcast an all-Canadian doubleheader, kicking off with rookie Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs visiting Erik Karlsson and the Ottawa Senators at 6:30 p.m. ET / 3:30 p.m. PT on Sportsnet, Rogers NHL GameCentre LIVE and Sportsnet NOW. In the second game of the twin bill, Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers host Mark Giordano and the Calgary Flames in the first NHL regular season game ever at Rogers Place, one of the most connected arenas in North America.

Highlights from Sportsnet’s 2016-17 NHL national broadcast schedule are as follows:

Hockey Night in Canada – Saturdays

  • Hockey Night in Canada will broadcast 94 games featuring Canadian teams, 20 all-Canadian matchups and 16 Original Six matchups throughout the season
  • The Hockey Night in Canada tradition continues on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 6:30 p.m. ET / 3:30 p.m. PT – the first Saturday night of the season – with four gamesshowcasing six Canadian NHL teams, including an Original Six matchup (Boston vs. Toronto) and two all-Canadian matchups (Ottawa vs. Montreal and Calgary vs. Vancouver)
  • This season marks the return of host Ron MacLean, as well as the debut of David Amber, the newest host on hockey’s biggest night
  • MacLean and Amber will be joined by expert analysts Elliotte Friedman, Kelly Hrudey and Nick Kypreos every Saturday night, while Canadian icon Don Cherry returns for Coach’s Cornerduring the first intermission alongside MacLean
