I’m not entirely convinced that another first-round exit or a missed playoff berth is going to have John McDonough sharpening his axe, but it’s certainly possible. It won’t be an easy call. Joel Quenneville is the second-winningest coach in NHL history, and is coming off his best regular-season coaching job in 2016-17. Stan Bowman is McDonough’s chosen one, who has won three Stanley Cups, playing a major role in two of them. But as Quenneville said, it’s a “winning business,” and if the Hawks aren’t winning, then there have to be consequences.
