08/23/2023 at 12:04pm EDT

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA --- Arizona Coyotes General Manager Bill Armstrong announced today that the Coyotes have signed Head Coach André Tourigny to a three-year contract extension. As per club policy, the terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"We are very pleased to sign André to a three-year extension," said Armstrong. "He is an excellent coach, leader and communicator who has helped us establish a tremendous culture in our dressing room. Our players like him, respect him and compete hard for him. We are thrilled to have him signed as our head coach for the next three years."

"I'm very grateful to have the trust of Mr. Meruelo, Bill and Xavier," said Coyotes Head Coach André Tourigny. "The structure put in place by our management has energized our team. I'm also very fortunate to have such a quality coaching staff to work with. It is a pleasure and a privilege to work with them every day. In addition, our high performance, development, medical and equipment staff do an excellent job of taking care of our players. That is the best environment that you can dream of having.

"I feel very lucky to work with our group of players as well. The hard work and commitment to the team they have demonstrated the past two years has established the foundation of our culture. It's an exciting time to be part of the Coyotes. My family and I love the Valley and we are thrilled to be committed long term in Arizona."

The 49-year-old Tourigny is entering his third season as Arizona's head coach. In 164 games behind the bench, Tourigny has registered a 53-90-21 record. Since being named as the Coyotes head coach on July 1, 2021, Tourigny has played a key role in the organization's rebuild, helping develop core players like Clayton Keller, Lawson Crouse, Nick Schmaltz, Matias Maccelli, Barrett Hayton, Dylan Guenther, Juuso Valimaki and J.J. Moser.

Tourigny led the Coyotes to a 23-point improvement from 2021-22 to 2022-23, capped with a 28-40-14 record (73 points) last season. In the franchise's first season at Mullett Arena, Tourigny helped guide the Coyotes to an impressive 21-15-5 home record (.573 point percentage). The success resulted in a .268 home point percentage improvement from 2021-22 (.305), good for the highest year-over-year improvement in Coyotes team history.

On the international level, Tourigny served as the Head Coach for Team Canada at the 2023 IIHF World Championship where he led Team Canada to a gold medal. Three Coyotes players represented Canada at the tournament (Crouse, Jack McBain and Michael Carcone) culminating with the team winning all three games in the playoff round with a plus-eight goal differential. Tourigny also was an assistant coach on Team Canada's coaching staff at the 2022 World Championship that earned a silver medal.

Prior to joining the Coyotes, Tourigny was on a one-year loan to Hockey Canada from the Ottawa 67's (OHL) for the 2020-21 season. He helped lead Canada to a 3-2 gold medal victory at the 2021 World Championship - his first of three consecutive World Championship medals serving on Team Canada's coaching staff. The Nicolet, Quebec native originally signed a one-year contract with Hockey Canada on March 24, 2021, to participate in four international tournaments, becoming the first full-time coach with Canada's men's program since 2005.

Tourigny's experience with Hockey Canada also includes guiding its junior team to a silver medal as head coach at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship. He previously won a gold medal as an assistant coach at the 2020 World Junior Championship as well as silver medals as an assistant in 2010 and 2011.

In addition to his four appearances at the World Juniors, Tourigny led Canada's National Men's Summer Under-18 Team to a gold medal as head coach at the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup and won gold as an assistant at the 2008 Ivan Hlinka tournament.

Tourigny joined the Ottawa 67's of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) as Head Coach and Vice President of Hockey Operations prior to the 2017-18 season. He was the recipient of the Matt Leyden Trophy as OHL coach of the year in back-to-back seasons (2018-19 and 2019-20) as well as the Brian Kilrea Coach of the Year Award as the CHL Coach of the Year in 2019-20.

In his 11 years with Rouyn-Noranda, Tourigny's team qualified for the playoffs in all but one season while he posted a 337-336-20 record in 693 regular season games, which set a QMJHL record for most games coached with one franchise. In 2005-06, Tourigny received the QMJHL Ron Lapointe Coach of the Year Award.

The veteran coach also worked in the NHL including three seasons as an assistant coach with the Colorado Avalanche (2013-15) and the Ottawa Senators (2015-16).
