The National Hockey League (NHL) saw an additional nine franchises added in the period spanning 1990-2000. The league was also going through a stellar period with the likes of Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemiuex dominating and the successful EA video game franchise bringing a host of new fans.

Here we take a look at some of the stats for each of the new teams.

San Jose Sharks

The San Jose Sharks were the first new franchise of the 1990s with the club starting out in 1991-92. The team boasts an impressive record of 21 playoff appearances in 29 seasons. San Jose have been most successful against the Winnipeg Jets, with 21 wins in 35 games. The best season for the franchise was trip to the 2016 Stanley Cup Finals where they were defeated in seven games by the Penguins.

Ottawa Senators

The original Ottawa Senators were founded in 1883 and went on to win 11 Stanley Cups, 1917 until 1934. A new franchise was awarded in 1990 and began playing in the 1992–93 NHL season.

The new Senators have made sixteen playoff appearances and won four divisional titles. Their best season culminated with an appearance in the 2007 Stanley Cup Finals, their only finals appearance to date. Anaheim defeated Ottawa in five games for their first Stanley Cup.

Anaheim Ducks

The Anaheim Ducks were founded in 1993 by The Walt Disney Company as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. The name was based on the 1992 film The Mighty Ducks. Disney sold the franchise in 2005 after one western conference championship and the team went on to win that Stanley Cup against the Senators in 2006.

The Ducks have had the most success against the Boston Bruins, with 19 wins from 27, for a 0.595% points percentage.

Florida Panthers

The Panthers began life in the 1993–94 NHL season, where they set a then-record for most successful expansion team. That lasted until the Vegas Golden Knights’ 2017–18 season. The Panthers have made one appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals, the only season in which the team has won a playoff series, eventually losing to the Colorado Avalanche. The Panthers have struggled to find the same success since and have only seen the playoffs six times since 1996.

Nashville Predators

The Predators were founded in 1998 and reached their first playoffs after five seasons in the 2003–04 season. Nashville made it to their first Stanley Cup Finals in 2017 but were defeated by the Pittsburgh Penguins in six games. During the next season, the Predators won their first Presidents' Trophy and Central Division title. The Predators have high all-time points ratios against a number of teams including Columbus Blue Jackets (0.726%), New York Islanders (0.672%), and the Montreal Canadiens (0.648%).

Winnipeg Jets

The Jets were created as the Atlanta Thrashers in 1997 and became the NHL’s 28th franchise when they started out in 1999–2000. The team were relocated to Winnipeg in 2011 and have the unfortunate record of zero Stanley Cups, conference titles, or President’s trophies, although they lost out to the Golden Knights in the 2017-18 conference finals.

Columbus Blue Jackets

The Blue Jackets started 2000 and failed to register a 30 win season until the 2005–06 season. They qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time in 2009, but were swept by the Red Wings. The first playoff victory came during the 2014 playoffs and five years later, the team won their first playoff series. Defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning, they became the first team in NHL history to sweep a Presidents' Trophy winner in round one.

Minnesota Wild

The Wild were founded in 1997 but did not start until the 2000–01 season. In the 2002–03 season, the team made their first Stanley Cup playoffs appearance, making a surprising run to the Western Conference Finals. Since then, the team has struggled in the postseason, having made it to the second round twice since 2003.
