from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
Not only will there be a new look for the Ottawa Senators on the ice this coming season, there will be a new look off it, as well.
As the Senators prepare to open training camp Sept. 13 with medicals at the Canadian Tire Centre, newly appointed head coach D.J. Smith, along with assistants Jack Capuano, Davis Payne, Bob Jones, goalies coach Pierre Groulx and video coach Mike King have spent the past week huddled in their offices in the bowels of the rink.
There is no shortage of work to do to get the Senators back to respectability, so when the 42-year-old Smith went looking for people to fill the assistants roles on his staff, he wanted to make sure he got the right people in place. Groulx, who has done a good job with the goalies the past three years, is the only holdover from the previous coaching staff.
Smith wanted to find the right mix when he did his extensive search for a staff in late-May and June. This is his first NHL head-coaching job and there are a lot of people in his position who wouldn’t go with guys with previous experience as NHL head coaches — such as Payne with St. Louis and Capuano with the New York Islanders.
