A Better Experience For The Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Hockey Fans

NEW YORK (Dec. 2, 2022) – The National Hockey League today announced a season-long partnership with P-X-P (formerly Play-By-Play Sports Interpreting) to expand its commitment to Deaf and hard-of-hearing fans.

As part of the agreement, the League will provide picture-in-picture ASL interpreting at Commissioner Gary Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly’s media availabilities at the 2023 Honda NHL® All-Star Weekend and the 2023 Stanley Cup Final. This initiative is a continuation of a successful integration during the 2022 Stanley Cup Final, which for the first time brought sign language to the high-profile, all-encompassing State of the League address.

“P-X-P is thrilled to support the NHL’s commitment in elevating the experience of Deaf and hard-of-hearing hockey fans, and create a new standard of accessible and inclusive experiences in sports for others to follow,” said Jason Altmann, the Chief Operating Officer of P-X-P.

P-X-P also will have Deaf performers for pre-game ceremonies at the 2023 Discover NHL Winter Classic®, 2023 Honda NHL® All-Star Weekend and 2023 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series™ and will advise the League on future opportunities to create an enhanced experience for Deaf and hard-of-hearing fans both in venues and watching at home.

“Our relationship with P-X-P has further opened our minds to thoughtful, creative possibilities that enhance the entertainment experience for our Deaf and hard-of-hearing fans,” said Kim Davis, NHL Sr. Executive Vice President of Social Impact, Growth Initiatives and Legislative Affairs. “We’re bringing to life a strategy that incorporates representation, performance and substance – informed and inspired by those from within the community.”

The NHL recognizes International Day of Persons with Disabilities on Saturday, Dec. 3, and is focused on practices, innovations and events that create and promote equality and accessibility for all persons with disabilities. In November, the NHL and Anaheim Ducks hosted the 2022 USA Hockey Sled Classic, and throughout the season the NHL continues to expand the availability of sensory kits at signature League events including the NHL Winter Classic, NHL All-Star Weekend and NHL Stadium Series.
