Not a Roenick fan or anything, though I didn’t mind
him given some of the alternatives.
It shows these gigs are (for most) hardly an entitlement
and can too easily be taken for granted.
Players and former players with something to lose need to realize
that fitting in with the vibe and trying to sound cool on a podcast with
has been, fringe former players is not remotely worth the trouble.
Wonder what the real input from his former colleagues was behind the scenes
and if it mattered much. In a lot of these cases, one slip is all the network needs to justify cutting lose a contract they might regard as needlessly expensive and expendable. As dumb as Roenick’s comments were and as unfair a spot as they put his colleagues in, they were not at all mean spirited. Wonder if it was more about PR and cancel culture or the network seizing a chance to save money.

This is kind of where i’m at. Never been a fan of him and think he’s kind of an all around dumbass, but I don’t think the comments were in any way malicious/threatening/damaging/whatever. Pretty soft to fire him for those alone but i guess when the stench of Matt Lauer’s rape office with desk-controlled door lock is still in the air at NBC they have to error on that side of these kinds of things.
And a reminder of the actual comments before the pearl clutching begins:
Roenick said if he, his wife and Tappen were “going to bed together ... that would really be good, but it’s never going to happen.” Of Sharp, Roenick said he was “so beautiful.

Good to see the network is finally holding someone accountable for their actions. It needs to happen more often.
