The Latest On Dustin Byfuglien

via Bob McKenzie tweets,

As just reported on @NBCSN, Dustin Byfuglien recently underwent ankle surgery to take care of unresolved issues from the high-ankle sprain he suffered late last season. What that means for his future and whether it could, in time, lead to his return to WPG remains to be seen.

It’s certainly premature to say Byfuglien will return to active duty in the NHL this season, but there is a sense if he does feel healthy again, he may be inclined to return at some point.

It’s believed one of the biggest factors why Byfuglien opted not to play this season is because his ankle was so troublesome. That begs the question, why not report to WPG training camp, go on injured reserve, rehab it or get surgery or whatever and get paid to do so?

Elliotte Friedman tweet,

On Byfuglien: surgery was last week. Recovery expected to take until the New Year — and we’ll see what he decides. This adds an extra layer around his contract situation, too, because he can argue he deserves to be paid while recovering from a legitimate injury.

Maybe he just also wanted to get away for awhile with fewer strings.

But high ankle sprains can take a long time to come back from and for such a big man, who relies on mobility as well as power and skill, it sounds extra challengingly, especially recovering well over thirty.

Maybe he still doesn’t know what he wants to do and the surgery is as much for his own quality of life as for being able to play comfortably.

But if the team wants him back and he’s getting surgery necessary to do so that puts him out over two months, I’d think if he does return they’d want to work out a way to pay him even if retroactivity, if permissible, for at least those two months.

“Challengingly” - like trying to type in my native language, apparently

Is there a deadline for Buff to be back with the team in order to be eligible for the playoffs? Or is that just for guys without contracts. I know the Canadian media was all pulling their hair out about getting Nylander signed by Dec 1 so he’d be eligible. Dustin isn’t collecting his salary from the Jets, does that fall under the same rule?

High ankle sprains for anyone just seem to never go away.  The surgery should help strengthen that area
