The Jack Eichel Situation

from Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News,

The Sabres deserve the criticism they are getting for not making the playoffs in 10 consecutive seasons. But there's not enough talk about how much responsibility Eichel bears for the last six seasons. And he bears some of it, even for all the good moments he's produced in the face of so much chaos and bad play around him.

Your star players get all the plaudits in good times and the heavy arrows in times of trouble. Eichel should not be exempt from that. No one is trashing Zach Bogosian for yet another playoff failure in Toronto in May. All the talk is about Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner not coming through for the Leafs against Montreal. That's life as a star.

This theory that Eichel can't be here because he'll poison the room has merit but if he wants out, he can't be a toxic captain. Who is trading for that? He needs to shut up and play. And play well. Every team in the league will be paying attention. He'll enjoy playing for Don Granato, too.

And with five years left on his deal, we're not talking a long stretch. Just play for a month or two and people will rethink offers and ring Adams' phone again. How can any GM trade for Eichel now? What GM can tell his owner he just traded for a $50 million contract when he has no idea how or when the player will return from surgery?

An interesting conundrum here for me.  One is I think a person has the right to determine his/her own medical treatment.  I have no idea of the competence of the Sabers doctors.  Just as there is a wide range of competence in hockey players so is there a wide range of competence in doctors.  The reverse for me is that does a company have the right to demand their workers get vaccinated? I think they do.  But we are also talking about the difference here in a vast overwhelming consensus in getting vaccinated by science verses something that is not overwhelmingly known yet.  Like most things in life there are shades of grey verses black and white.  I don’t wish to turn this into a forum for vaccination vs. non-vaccinated.  It however may be an issue for you to ponder.

This will NOT turn into that type of conversation here.

The article posted has not hing to do with what you are trying to turn this into and I will not let it happen.

Comment on the topic at hand, no idea why you thought it was your prerogative to try and turn this into something else.

Elliotte Friedman tweet,

A development in the Jack Eichel situation: hearing he is now going to be represented by Pat Brisson.

There has to be more to this story than what’s being presented, and If he is fighting for body autonomy, there are better ways to go about than tweeting an emoji.

Call me old fashion, but this looks like the worst case scenario of a young man making way too much money.

I wonder about, and I’d love to see a study on it, the wealth of athletes verse the age at which they got paid.

I think the best thing the NHL has done in a long time was but a cap on the 3 year entry level deal, and I don’t think it would be unwise to put a cap the “bridge deal,” and only hand out max deals post age 25-27 (when the brain is fully developed in adult males).

I wonder how the situation would play out if say, Eichel was only making 5 million at age 24 with this season being the one that could earn him the 10 million deal and team option. I bet he’d be on the ice, and if not, its a much, much, more tradable scenario, because his term up sooner.

Trading for a healthy and productive Sam Reinhart yielded a first round pick and a prospect.  All of his $5 million was picked up by FLA.

BUF has to concede something because of Eichel’s disputed neck surgery.

Eichel had a bad enough rep before this past season to make it a tricky situation. He absolutely deserves criticism - he acts like a princess.
