Defenseman Slava Voynov will not play for Team Russia at the World Cup of Hockey 2016.
NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly announced Monday the Russian Federation had accepted the NHL's "determination that Slava Voynov will remain ineligible to participate in the World Cup of Hockey 2016."
Voynov, who played four seasons with the Los Angeles Kings, was suspended indefinitely by the NHL after his arrest on felony domestic violence charges Oct. 20, 2014. He entered a no-contest plea to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge and served a 90-day sentence. He opted to return to Russia in September 2015.
On May 27, he was one of the final players added to the Team Russia roster. Three days later, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said Voynov could not play in the World Cup due to his NHL suspension.
"There has been no change in his status," Bettman said. "He's been suspended from the League and the Russian Federation was told that he was not eligible to play in the World Cup. What happens from that moving forward in terms of what somebody may try to do is a different story, but his status has not changed."
