Morning Line- Jim Nill On Corey Perry

“I’ve been lucky, I’ve had a lot of guys who really made an impact in a certain way, Corey is one of them. He does things the way you want players to do things. He just does it the right way. He’s professional about it. He’s a good teammate and he’s all about winning.”

-Jim Nill, GM of the Dallas Stars on Montreal's Corey Perry.  Pierr LeBrun of the Athletic has more ($$$) on Perry.

So why didn’t he bring him back for league minimum? It was one of the odd moves of the 20/21 free agency period.

“Nill, looking back, now acknowledges he wished he had kept him after Perry became UFA last fall. But between salary cap issues and wanting to make room for youngsters such as impressive rookie Jason Robertson, the Stars made the difficult decision to let Perry go to market.

“But if hindsight was 20/20, with the all injuries we ended up having, we should have signed him,” said Nill. “But at the moment you don’t know you’re going to get all those injuries. But we were tight up against the cap.”

Haven’t really been a fan of Perry over the years but last year and this year in the playoffs he has been fantastic, definitely have new respect for his play.

Dorky Fairy’s world famous 200-foot own goal.

I still cry tears of unbridled absolute joy every time.

Well at least Nill signed him low in a year he didn’t do much in the regular
season but was clutch in their playoff run. This season they went nowhere and he
wouldn’t have changed that. So I guess he did Perry a favor by not signing him?

Meanwhile Nill did just bring back Blake Comeau who has had a surprisingly long
career as an irritating bottom six player - sort of a poor man’s Corey Perry.

As much as I loathed Perry with Anaheim, it’s true there were some comical moments of him getting his comeuppance. This late in his career he’s hardly the leagues worst offender when it comes to cheap stuff. At least as often he’s on the receiving end. And it’s easier to appreciate how hard it is to come back late along after a major injury in an ever younger, faster league and still make an impact when it matters most.

I read somewhere today that 2 teams were talked out of claiming him by Perry’s agent when he was waived. Was on the reddit wings sub or on tsn if I remember correctly. Shenanigans!
