Marc-Andre Fleury A Goalie “Under Siege”

from Michael Traikos of the National Post,

Marc Andre-Fleury might not be tired. But like last year and the year before, when he played well for Pittsburgh in the beginning of the playoffs and then handed off the reigns at the end, the Vegas goalie appears to be in need of relief.

The problem is the Golden Knights don’t have Matt Murray sitting on the bench. They have Maxime Lagace, who last played three months ago. So it’s up to Fleury, down 3-1 in the Stanley Cup final, to improve his game and try to save a series that is one more Washington win away from being over.

“His numbers look terrible, but if you broke down the goals he’s given up, it’s a lot of second or third opportunities or backdoor plays,” former NHL goalie Jamie McLennan, who is a hockey analyst for TSN, said in a telephone conversation on Tuesday. “We’ve never seen Vegas under siege like this.”

I think that’s completely unfair to fluery. Regardless of who is in goal, Vegas can’t win playing the defense they are playing.

Fluery has been good all playoffs, but Vegas’s offense has hushed the deficiencies of their defense. No one cared when they gave up 3 or 4 goals as long as they scored 4,5,or 6. Now that they can’t score, it’s an issue.

But you can’t blame fluery for not clearing the puck out of the crease, or for not stopping across the ice passes.

At 3:25 into this video clip, Kolzig discusses Fleury’s style, it almost seems prophetic whne you see he goals Vegas (the wholeteam, not just the goalie) are giving up.

Seems certain people are so quick to turn on goalies these days. A significant number of Preds fans and writers blame Rinne for losing, as do a number of Jets fans/writers blame Hellebuyck. These ppl always seem to overlook defensive mistakes, and an inability to score the other way.

If you need your goalie to constantly steal games, then maybe you’re not good enough to beat the other team.
