Lawsuit Filed Against The CHL With Numerous Charges

from Rick Westhead of TSN,

The Canadian Hockey League and its three major junior leagues have been complicit for decades in rampant hazing, bullying, and abuse of underage players by coaches, team staff and senior players, alleges a proposed class-action lawsuit.

The lawsuit was filed Thursday in Ontario Superior Court in Toronto by former CHL players Dan Carcillo and Garrett Taylor. The filing doesn’t specify what sort of damages the plaintiffs are seeking.

“Survivors of such abuse have come forward and continue to come forward to this day,” the lawsuit alleges. “However, the defendants have stubbornly ignored or failed to reasonably address this institutionalized and systemic abuse. Rather than respond to or make meaningful attempts to prevent such abuse, the defendants have instead perpetuated a toxic environment that condones violent, discriminatory, racist, sexualized, and homophobic conduct, including physical and sexual assault, on the underage players they are obligated to protect.”

CHL president Dan MacKenzie did not respond to an email requesting comment. The allegations against the CHL have not been proven and the league has not filed its defence to the claims.

Dan Martin of the NY Post,

The suit, obtained by several media outlets, alleges teenage players were “routinely victims to hazing, bullying, physical and verbal harassment, physical assault, sexual harassment, and sexual assault.”

The abuse described by Carcillo included allegations that he and others were “repetitively hit on their bare buttocks with a sawed-off goalie stick, developing large welts and open sores.”

There are also disturbing allegations of players being forced to masturbate in front of teammates and coaches as well as other sexual acts, including objects being forced into their anuses.

About 8 years ago I read a book by a former player. I can’t remember who the player was, it might have been Probert. It went into just a few stories about their time in Canadian junior leagues and I couldn’t believe the crap that was “normal” for these kids. It was just part of the routine, if you didn’t want to deal with it you could leave. Not just abuse from the coaches but from other players. And it wasn’t just mild hazing, it was some things that could mess with a person’s head forever.

I’m not a fan of how Carcillo has handled some of these things post career, but I do hope this area is something that gains traction and changes.

It’s amazing how much very cult-like
physical and especially sexual ritual humiliation
and indoctrination seems to go on behind the scenes
in the more outwardly macho and masculine and traditionalist
boys and young men’s sports. Wrestling was another sport
where all kinds of awful stories like this would surface.
It comes up a lot in certain fraternity rituals, too.

Seems to be all about breaking down the individual and
demanding complete subordination to the team or group:
loyalty to the team at any cost.

Can’t anyone put their heart and soul into playing a tough,
physically demanding team sport without being beaten, having
things stuck up your ass, and being forced to do incriminating things
that bind you to a cult?

Thank goodness being a mediocre distance runner never required
this kind of insanity.
