The Boos? Oh, They Pretty Much Stopped With Nine Minutes Left

02/09/2009 at 11:16am EST

You know, it’s a little strange that we refer to the Blues fans as “bitter.” I mean, they are…don’t get me wrong. But we definitely shouldn’t be so narrow-minded as to think that other fans aren’t included in that description.

Now, I think you have an idea where I’m going with this. So, before I begin…I’m playing with house money. For three years I’ve been building up the collateral that allows me to say what’s gonna follow after the little jumpety doo. Because I’ve defended Sergei Fedorov every time the pretend Wing fans boo’d him at the Joe? Because I’ve done that consistently, I can say this with a certain amount of credibility.

You should have known better. You should have known that there was a real strong possibility that Marian Hossa was going to stick those boos right up your asses and laugh at you afterward. You should have known that all those idiotic signs and catcalls would actually motivate the Wings to dominate your little team even further. How badly do you think Hossa wanted to do what he did?

And, seriously, just how badly did the Wings want to shove this one into whatever crevice happened to be available? Real badly.

All you did yesterday, Pens “fans”, was guarantee Marian Hossa is going to sign with the Wings for a lot less than you would have ever paid him, and for a long frigging time.

What? Oh yeah. He’s gonna sign. That guy, and this is gonna hurt, just loves being a Detroit Red Wing. Rich Winter probably stabbed himself in the temple yesterday when he saw the smile on Hossa’s face after that goal. You know what that was? A six-million dollar smile. Sounds like a lot, until you compare it to what he’d get anywhere else. No matter. Signing and renewing soon.

Oh, and Pens fans? While Hank Zetterberg was owning your hero Thid? Hossa was thinking about shutting you up. While Ty Conklin, who you didn’t boo for whatever reason, was making easy save after easy save? Hossa was biding his time. And then that backhand? Right to the nutsack, eh? Boo that bitches. Oh. You didn’t did you? That’s where the boo’s ended.

Whatever. Screw the Penguins and their “fans”, the same ones who boo’d the Wings when they skated the Cup. Classy. Like I said…whatever. We’ll be seeing them once per year the next five years. Non issues. Yesterday wasn’t about them anyway. It was about the Red Wings all of a sudden deciding the time is right to start imposing their will again. Got a superstar? Here’s Zetterberg. Oh, you have two? Here’s Lidstrom. What was Crosby yesterday? -1 with 1 shot? Seriously. 38 seconds of PK time, though. What a leader.

That’s the league posterboy? Kirk Maltby doesn’t think so. At least he didn’t when he was cross-checking his ass back to the ice yesterday, then yapping at him until little Sid started to cry. Mikael Samuelsson probably doesn’t think so either. And you know what? There are literally three forwards on the Wings I’d take before Crosby. Think about that.

Alright. Enough. That team is done. There are some good fans over there. Many who recognize the fact that Hossa doesn’t deserve the treatment he’s gotten for the last eight months, not just yesterday. Many of those fans understand the choice he made and the role he played in giving them a great run last spring. But just like the fans who treat Fedorov like trash when he returns? Well, you know my stance on that.

Other issues: Make no mistake about it. Uncle Mike Babcock has little to no use for Chris Osgood right now. Back to back afternoon games and Conklin starts them both? If Osgood didn’t have a problem with Babcock before? Yeah, I’d say he does now. The honeymoon, I’m betting, is long past over. But no matter how brittle that relationship is, what you’re about to read is still the definition of idiocy.

Manny Legace looks to be heading to either Columbus or Detroit on Re-entry waivers early next week I am told…..

Guess who? Exactly. Klessel. If you’re reading this and paying to subscribe to that site? Please just go away. You’re dumbing us down just by your presence here. Seriously. Just leave.

I can’t even begin to list the reasons why that is one of the stupidest things I’ve ever read. Mind boggling.

I’m not smart enough to be able to point out the reasons why the penalty kill has improved the last few games. All I know is that it has. I don’t know why, defensively, this team looks better with Ty Conklin in net. I just know it does.

Matt Saler commented at On The Wings that Ville Leino just “looks like an NHL player.” More than that, he looks like a Red Wing. Puck possession, puck control, limit the turnovers.

And dammit if Helm wasn’t a little wrecking ball yesterday too. How well did the Wings play? No Homer. No Franzen. No mention of their absence in the Live Blog. No, “If onlys..”. None of that.

You know what yesterday reminded me of? Game 5, right up until 34.7. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it a few more times, as many as six or seven hundred, over the next decade or so: the Wings have never looked better than they did in the 3rd period of Game 5. While the major takeaway from that game will always be Talbot’s kick to the nuts, I still have good memories of that game because of how Detroit dominated play over a great majority of it. They did the same thing yesterday.

And I’ll say this: Once the penalty kill gets even better? Watch out. Sound familiar, Okie?

Saturday was good. Sunday was better. Turning the corner? Perhaps. Reasons? Well, I guess it’s time we addressed this. The elephant in the room.

Some of you made comments, hurtful comments, in the Live Blog yesterday. You said that due to the Wings’ remarkable turnaround the last two days, that perhaps I should, I don’t know, stay the hell out of the LBs until further notice. The weak among you who succomb to superstition, animal sacrifice, the occasional arson, excessive drinking at all hours of the day and juvenile obscenities? In other words, all 19 of you? You seem to be suggesting that my absence contributed to the team’s success.

I’ve given this considerable thought and I’m making this announcement: I’ll be watching you bitches. I’ll be monitoring, taking notes and storing shit away. Don’t think you can run amok in there. And if the Wings ever lose again? Well, then me and Seger and Gordo are coming right back in and you won’t be able to stop us.

But for now? We’re taking our beer and watching from the sidelines. The Gamewrecker is stepping aside until the fun stops.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
