DETROIT RED WINGS
STELLAR STOPPER
With 2 shutouts this series vs. TB, Petr Mrazek has joined an elite club of goaltenders who have recorded two shutouts in the same series they made their NHL playoff debuts in. Mrazek joins WSH’s Semyon Varlamov (vs. NYR in 2009), MTL’s Carey Price (vs. BOS in 2008), PHI’s Ron Hextall (vs. NYR in 1987) and BOS’s Tiny Thompson (vs. MTL in 1929), according to Elias.
Additionally, Mrazek is the 14th Red Wing goalie to post 2 shutouts in one playoff series and just the 3rd rookie, joining Earl Robertson (vs. NYR in 1937) and Harry Lumley (vs. TOR in 1945). After DET’s Game 1 win, he was also the fifth rookie in DET history to win his playoff debut (along with Chris Osgood, Bob Champoux, Glen Hall and Johnny Mowers) and, per Elias, was the 1st goalie to make 44+ saves during a playoff debut in a regulation game since 4/8/80 (TOR’s Jiri Crha made 55 saves vs. MIN).
Tampa Bay was only shut out once during the regular season, on 3/28 at Joe Louis Arena (4-0 W), a feat that Mrazek and DET have repeated twice in the postseason (Games 3 and 5).
Mrazek also has three shutouts during the month of April and four in the last 30 days.
MORE SERIES NOTES
- DET’s playoff series record after winning Game 1: 50-14 (25-7 during 24-season playoff streak)
- Per Elias, DET had won just 1 playoff game over the last 40 years (1-10-2) with fewer than 15 shots on goal, and the team had been limited to fewer than 15 shots just once in the last 10 seasons
- Jurco’s goal 8 seconds into the 2nd period of Game 1 was the fastest to start a period in DET playoff history and the 5th fastest in NHL playoff history (LA’s Don Kozak 4/17/77 and PHI’s Pelle Eklund 4/25/89 share the record at 6 seconds)
- Per Elias, Mrazek became DET’s 5th rookie goaltender to record a shutout in a playoff game, joining Earl Robertson (vs. NYR in 1937, twice), Terry Sawchuk (at MTL in 1951), Chris Osgood (vs. SJ in 1994) and Jimmy Howard (vs. PHX in 2010). It was also the 3rd shutout by a rookie goaltender for any NHL team over the last four playoff years, along with MIN’s Darcy Kuemper (vs. COL in 2014)
and ANA’s John Gibson (at LA in 2014).
