Preview And Notes- Detroit Red Wings vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

03/15/2015 at 8:28am EDT

Game starts just after 12:30pm ET and is on NBC and Sportsnet

via Brina Hedger at NHL.com,

Season series: The Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings split the first two games, but the Penguins have three of the possible four points. Detroit defenseman Niklas Kronwall (two goals, two assists) and forward Henrik Zetterberg (one goal, three assists), and Pittsburgh forward Blake Comeau (one goal, three assists) each has four points.

Red Wings team scope: Detroit has developed a habit of getting outplayed in the first period and not recovering. It happened again Saturday at the Philadelphia Flyers, who defeated them 7-2. Detroit has lost two games in a row and four of the past five. The Red Wings, who will start goalie Petr Mrazek, are 2-4-0 since trading for forward Erik Cole and defenseman Marek Zidlicky before the NHL Trade Deadline on March 2. The Boston Bruins are three points behind Detroit for third in the Atlantic Division.

Penguins team scope: Coach Mike Johnston said he doesn't know the availability of captain Sidney Crosby or center Evgeni Malkin. Crosby wasn't feeling well after warm-ups Saturday and was a late scratch for a 2-0 loss at the Boston Bruins. Malkin left after playing 4:15 because of a lower-body injury that appeared to happen during his first shift. If one of them plays, look for forward Craig Adams to be in the lineup. If neither plays, the Penguins could use seven defensemen or call up a forward from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Goalie Marc-Andre Fleury is likely to start. The Penguins are third in the Metropolitan Division but are bearing down on the New York Rangers and New York Islanders. Pittsburgh is 10-5-2 in the past 17 games; the Penguins have scored at least four goals in nine of those games, going 9-0-0, and are 1-5-2 in eight games scoring one or no goals.

DETROIT RED WINGS

The Wings have yet to supply their game notes so let's turn to Brian Savage of Mlive for some information...

• The Red Wings and Penguins have split two games this season. The Red Wings won 4-3 in overtime Oct. 23 at Joe Louis Arena, where Justin Abdelkader scored the winning goal after Detroit tied it on goals by Zetterberg and Niklas Kronwall in the final 2:39 of regulation with goaltender Jimmy Howard on the bench for an extra attacker. The Penguins won a 4-1 rematch last month in Pittsburgh, where they chased Petr Mrazek from the Detroit net after two periods. Howard played the third in his first game back after missing almost five weeks with a torn groin. Mrazek is scheduled to start today.

• In the two games vs. the Penguins this season, Kronwall has two goals and two assists. Zetterberg has a goal and three assists. None of the other Red Wings have more than a point.

• Crosby hasn't registered a point in either game vs. Detroit. Blake Comeau leads the Penguins with a goal and three assists vs. the Red Wings. Goalie Marc-Andre Fleury is 1-0 with a 1.00 GAA and .958 save percentage. He's scheduled to start today. Thomas Greiss was in goal for the Penguins during the OT loss in Detroit.

TEAM NOTES:

LAST MINUTE CHANGE

Just minutes before yesterday’s scheduled puck drop of 1:08 p.m., the Penguins learned they would be without the services of team scoring leader Sidney Crosby, who missed the contest due to illness. Pittsburgh was able to substitute Craig Adams into the lineup to replace Crosby according to this ruling from the NHL Situation Room: Sidney Crosby took pre-game warmup but determined that he could not play in the Bruins/Penguins game and was replaced by Craig Adams. Since Crosby was in the previously submitted starting line-up, this change had to be made according to Rule 7.1 which states that changes to the starting line-up must be reviewed and approved by the Referee prior to the start of the game. Proper procedure was followed by the Penguins and Adams is now in the game.

MALKIN SIDELINED EARLY

As if losing Sidney Crosby at nearly the last possible second wasn’t enough, just minutes into the game Evgeni Malkin was knocked from the contest following a collision with a Bruins player. Malkin returned briefly later in the first period, but sat the final 40 minutes. Malkin skated just five shifts totaling 4:15 minutes as the Penguins for the most part played the contest without the services of the NHL’s No. 3 (Crosby) and 5 (Malkin) leading scorers entering the day.

DID YOU KNOW

The Penguins have quietly gone nearly a month since losing back-to-back regulation contests (Feb. 17-19 versus Washington and Columbus).
