Season series: The Detroit Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers split their previous two games this season, with the home team winning each time. Brayden Schenn scored the game-winning power-play goal in the third period of a 4-2 Flyers win Oct. 25 in Philadelphia. Pavel Datsyuk had two goals in a 5-2 Red Wings win Nov. 26 in Detroit.

Red Wings team scope: Now in his sixth season as the Red Wings starting goaltender, Jimmy Howard has played in every building except one: Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. That will change Saturday when Howard tries to help the Red Wings win their first regular-season game in Philadelphia since Jan. 25, 1997. "We definitely know about [the drought]," Howard said Friday, according to MLive.com. "But it's not something we think about, that's for sure." Howard said he's well-prepared for what he might hear from Flyers fans from sitting on the bench during previous Red Wings visits. "They never stop yelling at the opposing team," he said. "It makes for a great atmosphere. When their fans are into it, it makes it that much more fun to participate in the game." Forward Darren Helm practiced Friday for the first time since sustaining a strained oblique muscle Feb. 28 but likely won't play. Forward Tomas Jurco, who missed the final period and a half against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday after being high-sticked in the face, left practice early Friday and won't play.

Flyers team scope: With their power play 1-for-17 in the past seven games, the Flyers' struggles at even-strength stand out more. They're averaging 1.64 goals per game at 5-on-5, and among the bigger culprits is forward Claude Giroux, who had a Flyers-best 21 even-strength goals last season but has seven this season. Also down are forwards Matt Read (from 18 to five) and Brayden Schenn (from 16 to eight). "Giroux and [Jakub] Voracek, Schenn, [Sean] Couturier, Read … we need more 5-on-5 goals from them,” coach Craig Berube said, according to CSNPhilly.com. "… We have a structure on our offensive play in what we want to do. The one area where we haven't been very good at and we need to keep harping on is getting to the net more and harder. … And getting some dirty goals and some tips and rebounds around the net. That's the one area for me. We don't have enough guys getting there at the net." Defenseman Michael Del Zotto, who has missed the past three games because of an upper-body injury, skated Friday, according to CSNPhilly.com. Berube would not comment on his availability.

SEASON MEETINGS

Saturday, October 25, 2014: Flyers 4, Detroit 2 at Wells Fargo Center – For the second straight game, the Flyers recovered from an early 1-0 hole to take a win, this time vs. the Red Wings. Wednesday, November 26, 2014: Detroit 5, Flyers 2 at Joe Louis Arena – The Red Wings opened up the game with three goals in the second half of the second period and rode it to the victory. This is the first time since the 1992-93 season that Detroit will play two regular season games in Philadelphia. The Flyers were 0-1-1 vs. Detroit at the Spectrum that year.
The two teams have not done well in one another’s buildings over the years. The Flyers went 16 games without a win in Detroit from Nov. 4, 1988 to their next win on Jan. 2, 2011, and are 1-3 in the four games there since that win. Meanwhile, Detroit hasn’t won in Philadelphia since the 1997 Stanley Cup Final, going 0-9 at the Wells Fargo Center since then.
