GDT - Game # 64: Red Wings at Blues (8:30)

03/03/2009 at 9:50am EST

Detroit is in the Gateway City tonight to, hopefully, overcome the Blues. Although DET is 6-3-1 in their last ten games, they are coming off a thorough @ss-kicking from NSH Saturday night. Perhaps, in an attempt to instill some grit in the dressing room, DET has called up 6’ 5”, 220 lb Defenseman, Jonathan Ericcson. Ericcson will take Lilja’s spot. Lilja, certainly not the only Wing to get pummelled, is out at least two games with a concussion and knee injury. DET has also called up enforcer Aaron Downey. To make room for Downey and Ericcson, DET sent down Leino and Helm. Diggers say Hoss will play tonight.

The Blues, in the meantime, have made a serious charge up the standings going 6-2-2 in their last ten games, and are winners of 3 straight. As a result, St. Louis finds itself amongst the quagmire of teams battling for the final playoff spots. St. Louis currently has 64 points, and sits in 12th place in the terribly crowded tier of teams battling for the bottom three playoff spots.

6 Columbus 63 g/p, 68 pts
7 Edmonton 62 g/p, 67 pts
8 Anaheim 64 g/p, 67 pts
————————————————————-
9 Nashville 63 g/p, 66 pts
10 Minnesota 61 g/p, 65 pts
11 Dallas 62 g/p, 65 pts
12 St. Louis 62 g/p, 64 pts

The Blues will try to extend their season-high winning streak to four games. They are 0-3 against Detroit this season but have lost twice by a 4-3 score.

Standings:

DET: 63 g/p 41 14 8 90 pts (2 in Conf, 1 in Central), 234 gf, 187 ga, Last 10 6-3-1, Streak Lost 1

STL: 62 g/p 28 26 8 64 pts (12 in Conf, 5 in Central), 173 gf, 181 ga, Last 10 6-2-2, Streak Won 3

Worth noting, at the moment, that DET, CHI, and CBJ are in the playoffs. NSH and STL could be in as well. The Central has, apparently, gone from the Red Wings “punching bag”, to an extremely competitive Division. I don’t know when the last time was when every team in a Division made the playoffs, but I’ll try to hunt that stat down.

Stats (rank):

Jeff Sagarin NHL Ratings: from USAToday.com:

To make predictions for upcoming games, simply compare the RATINGS of
the teams in question and allow an ADDITIONAL .25 goals for the home
team. Thus, for example, a HOME team with a rating of 4.43 would be
favored by .57 goals over a VISITING team having a rating of 4.11
Or a VISITING team with a rating of 4.56 would be favored by .42 goals
over a HOME team having a rating of 3.89

NOTE: Use whatever home advantage is listed in the output below.
In the example just above, a home edge of .25 was shown for
illustrative purposes. The home edge will vary during the season.

Helene St. James from the Detroit Free Press had these notes from Monday practice:

Downey and Ericsson aren’t part of this afternoon’s practice, but they’re meeting the team at the airport for the flight to St. Louis. Mike Babcock said both Ericsson and Downey will play tomorrow. Babcock said he hadn’t decided on his defensive pairings, but the six will be Lidstrom, Rafalski, Kronwall, Stuart, Lebda and Ericsson.

Andreas Lilja missed practice and is out indefinitely. He said he has a concussion and a sore knee.

Marian Hossa practiced, and told me he’ll play Tuesday at St. Loius. Hossa has missed the last two games because of a stiff neck suffered when San Jose’s Ryan Clowe ran into him last Wednesday.

“I don’t feel any pain or dizziness, so it’s good,” Hossa said Monday.

It’s well-established what Downey brings, and given what happened to Lilja, and that Hossa was hurt last Wednesday when he was run into by San Jose’s Ryan Clowe, the Wings clearly feel a need to send a message.

These are the lines from practice – Tomas Holmstrom, though, is still recovering from hernia surgery and isn’t expected back until later this month, so don’t read too much into these combos (especially the bottom two).

Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatchsays this game may determine if the Blues are Buyers or Sellers at the trade deadline:

Typically on the days leading up to the NHL trading deadline, the actual games themselves can be afterthoughts. But that won’t be the case tonight when the Blues host the Detroit Red Wings on the eve of the deadline.

Any game against the Red Wings is an attention-grabber, but with the Blues inching closer to a playoff position and with the outcome of tonight’s game possibly affecting the club’s deadline strategy, there seems to be a lot riding on the final score.

It may not be a stretch, in fact, to call tonight the Blues’ biggest game since the 2004-05 NHL lockout. . .

With the combination of a win tonight and a handful of losses in the conference, the Blues could close their gap to one point from a playoff spot in the Western Conference.

That’s a dramatic difference from Jan. 15, when the Blues were 10 points behind the eighth-place team in the West. But in their last 20 games, the Blues are 12-3-5 for 29 points, ranking second behind New Jersey’s 32 for the most points in the league during that streak. . .

In the meantime, “we’ve got an angry Detroit coming in,” Murray said.
