from Craig Custance of The Athletic,
The Red Wings are going to be impacted by the four call-up rule, which limits them to four recalls after the trade deadline.
“It’s completely antiquated,” Martin said, and he’s right.
But it’s the rule. The Red Wings already used two of the four on Tyler Bertuzzi and Jared Coreau in order to make them both eligible for the AHL playoffs. They’ll likely keep one in their back pocket for a goalie move. That leaves one more call-up, with Svechnikov likely on his way with Frans Nielsen out according to one source. It would ultimately be a missed opportunity to get Hicketts more NHL playing time or even give Hronek a taste of what the next level looks like.
There are emergency call-ups, injuries and things that can change in a hurry in professional hockey. But as it’s playing out now, the young defensemen in the organization appear to be stuck in their current positions for the remainder of the year.
