Oskar Sundqvist On Steve Yzerman

from Bob Duff of Detroit Hockey Now,

“I was still nervous talking to him at the end of the season (during exit interviews),” Sundqvist said. “I was super scared. It’s kind of nerve wracking. People are scared when he walks in. But I think that’s how a GM should be.

“He has very high expectations for everybody. You can sense that he’s a successful GM. How he talks to you about his plans. He was very straight with me. He was very up front with me.

“You can see that he has goals in what he wants. He has a plan and he follows it and he doesn’t give a shit what anyone else thinks about it.”

Dan Rosen of NHL.com when asked who the next Detroit coach will be…

Yzerman, the Red Wings general manager, was the Tampa Bay Lightning GM when they hired Derek Lalonde and Jeff Halpern to be Jon Cooper’s assistants before the 2018-19 season. It’s reasonable to think Yzerman was waiting for the Lightning’s playoff run to end to interview Lalonde and Halpern, because each should be considered a candidate. If Yzerman is looking at the two Lightning assistants, Lalonde should have the inside track because he has head coaching experience. He had the position with Iowa of the American Hockey League before joining Cooper’s staff in Tampa Bay. He was also the head coach in the ECHL with Toledo and the USHL with Green Bay, helping it win the Clark Cup as league champions in 2011-12. He won division titles with Toledo. Halpern has no head coaching experience. In finding a replacement for Jeff Blashill, the Red Wings are looking for a long-term solution similar to Cooper, who Yzerman hired when he was the GM in Tampa Bay. Lalonde is a coach with a track record of success, just like Cooper had before he got to the Lightning. Guessing here that Yzerman tries to follow the same script.

Yzerman is a winner.  Everything he is a part of is successful.  I wish the Penguins had him as the GM.
Hextall is a bum.

Max Bultman of The Athletic answers some fan mail.  This question on Berggren…

The first question will be which team he’s on — which I expect won’t be decided until after seeing him in the preseason. Berggren had a nice rookie year in the AHL, with plenty of production, but the Red Wings’ handling of Filip Zadina, Joe Veleno and Michael Rasmussen shows they’re not in the business of guaranteeing roster spots to young players. So while I think Berggren will spend a lot of time in the NHL next season, that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll start there — even Lucas Raymond had to tear up the exhibition season before earning his spot last year.

Whenever Berggren does get there, though, my guess is it won’t be in a fourth-line role. The Red Wings will likely need to surround him with some muscle and some reliable defenders, but Berggren’s main job is making plays, so they’ll want to pair him with finishers. If Joe Veleno can improve his defensive reliability, he could be a strong option. So could Michael Rasmussen. One of those two, plus either Sundqvist or a free agent, could make for a balanced line. But let’s see how the offseason goes first.

many ($) more questions…

When Yzerman drafted Seider, LOTS of people were disappointed.  Funny what a standout rookie season can do to people’s opinions on whom Yzerman is drafting.

The man just knows what he’s doing.

I’m unsure anyone doubted Yzerman’s drafting record, especially after the Holland era.  There were some sideways looks on the Seider pick but in Yzerman most of us Trust.

I guess I can agree with that given that even WWP was incredulous on Seider being drafted.  They felt defeated.  Several other Wings predictors were bummed out we didn’t draft Zegras or any other of the highly regarded forwards.

Yzerman doesn’t care what we think he should be drafting.  After the deals and drafts he made to make Tampa Bay who they are today, well, whatever he wants to do, we’re just riding along.
