The Latest On Myers-To-Detroit Talks

It appears as though trade talks between the Sabres and Red Wings involving Tyler Myers are still very much alive.

According to Ken Campbell of The Hockey News, Myers is at the top of Detroit's wish list for defensemen.

Campbell has been told that the current asking price is Dylan Larkin, a first-round pick, and "a roster player along the lines of a Riley Sheahan or Tomas Jurco".

It had been reported in recent months that Tim Murray was insisting on getting Anthony Mantha in any Myers deal, but it's no secret that Ken Holland has no interest in dealing him.

Tim Murray is a pretty funny guy.

Don’t think KH is that desperate or foolish.

Fine – as long as the Sabres pick up 80% of Myers salary and throw in their 2015 first-round pick.

There, now we have two proposals that are equally as stupid.

I watched that Buffalo LA game on Tuesday to get aa fresher sense of Meyers, and I think the Wings could do so much better. He’s certainly not in the Doughty class, or Subban, or Shattenkirk or even Giordano.  What is all the clamor about?

Apparently being right-handed is enough these days.  Hey wait, I’m a right-handed defenseman!  My second career can start at 60!  I’ll take league min!

In the last 24 hours I’ve heard that Detroit was close to getting Green, Yandle and now Myers.  Hockey media are a clueless bunch.

The most palatable option is giving away a first-round pick, which is a testament to Detroit’s scouting staff being able to find gems in later rounds.

@DaveDavisHockey What the F****, you are dreaming.  What an ass,  Myers would play maybe 5-6th on the Wings defence.  He’s way overpaid, that’s Buffaloes problem.  Put him on waivers and watch him clear at that cap hit.  Some guys need a keyboard up their ass.

Seems to me that the best option for Detroit would be to try and make one of their “nearly NHL ready but there’s absolutely no room to fit all of them in” defensive prospects the centrepiece along with a pick.

Because when you look at it, there’s really no way that Oullett, Marchenko, Backman, Sproul and Jensen are going to find room on Detroit’s roster in the next year or two.  Might as well dangle one (or more) for a fix now rather than losing one (or more) to the waiver wire next year or the year after.

Myers on the Wings roster slots in as the #2 defenseman behind Kronwall.

Kronwall
Myers
Dekeyser
Ericsson
Quincey
Smith

Seriously. If more than one of those players makes it as a regular, full-time NHL defenceman then damn good on Detroit’s scouting staff. In the meantime NONE of them are regular, full-time NHL defencemen. Yet to hear Wings’ fans tell it they’ll comprise our entire d-corps next season. The truth is that not all of those players will ever be regular NHL’s in Detroit’s organization so if you can upgrade by moving 1-2 of them and still have 2-3 left to groom why wouldn’t you consider it?

I’m not sure why everyone constantly hates on Myers. In his first two seasons in the league, at the ages of 20 and 21 he had the following stat lines: 11-37-48 and 10-27-37. Those are Kronwall type numbers. I can’t believe a player that young produces like that, particularly at the toughest position for young players, and now completely sucks. He does play on a team that’s been truly terrible for going on 3 consecutive seasons.

Tim Murray might not have said it, but he’s certainly implying it.  Shoot for the moon, I guess.

First in the East, but we HAVE to get Myers.  NAOW!  RIGHT NAOW!!!  ARGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!11!!!

The Red Wings don’t need Tyler Myers.

Pretty overboard IMO jhp.  Geez, the guy posts a story, makes a few remarks and he gets this?

Please show a bit of respect, otherwise don’t comment. Thanks.

First of all, what the heck did Dave do, kick your dog?

Secondly, I want whatever it is you’re shooting directly into your chest cavity, because that must be some gooooooood dope. That’s the only explanation I can think of for you thinking Myers would clear waivers. The first team with the cap space to fit him in the rest of this year would scoop him up in a heartbeat and deal with their medium-term salary structure in the off-season.

No, he’s not one of the top 5 D, or even top 10 D in the league right now. But he’s very young, big, has a right-handed shot, and has shown the ability to play a very good game in both ends of the rink.

D always take the longest to develop. The folks that would give up on Myers now would be the same folks that gave up on Chris Pronger in Hartford. Go back and read some of the stuff that people were saying about Pronger in his early years with the Whalers. Sounds eerily familiar to some of the talk we have about Myers.

This is why I don’t actually believe that there’s much fire here. The only reason it’d make sense for the Sabres to dangle Myers is to A) get a massive haul, as was floated in the original post, or B) if there is some non-talent reason they just don’t see a way forward with him in the fold (e.g. disputes with other young, core players, or management, or ownership).
