Sabres, Wild Open Preseason Tonight, Will Test 3-on-3 OT

The Sabres and Wild will open their preseason schedules tonight in Minnesota, and there will be a twist at the end of regulation.

Regardless of the final score, the teams will play a 5-minute, sudden-death 3-on-3 OT period as part of the NHL's test drive of the new format intended to reduce the number of shootouts.

Buffalo will be involved in the 3-on-3 tests 3 times - tonight, Wednesday at home vs. Ottawa, and October 1 when the Sabres are back in Minnesota.

It won't be the first time some Sabres fans have seen the new format, however. The Sabres and Bruins played a 3-on-3 after playing to a tie in regulation during the Prospects Challenge which was recently played in Buffalo. That one was decided by a Jack Eichel goal.

Speaking of Eichel, he'll be centering a line with Matt Moulson and Zemgus Girgensons tonight.

Chad Johnson and Nathan Lieuwen will both see time in net for Buffalo.

The top 2 lines for Minnesota will be Parise-Granlund-Pominville & Zucker-Koivu-Niederreiter.

It looks like Thomas Vanek won't play, while another ex-Sabre, Tyson Strachan, may see time paired with Mike Reilly.

Darcy Kuemper will start in goal for the Wild.
