Sabres Outshoot Sens 42-26 But Lose, 5-2

Evander Kane scored a pair of goals, and Buffalo put up 42 shots, but the Ottawa Senators left First Niagara Center with a 5-2 win in preseason action last night.

With Jack Eichel having the night off, Buffalo's top line was Kane-O'Reilly-Ennis. They were a force in the first period when Buffalo had 20 shot attempts to Ottawa's 11, but things fell apart in period two when the Sens scored 3 goals in a span of 3:26.

The Sabres managed to get within 4-2 late in the third before the Senators scored an empty net goal to clinch it.

Buffalo's troubles in this game were due in large part to some defensive lapses, as well as a few that the goalies would probably like to have back. Robin Lehner allowed 3 goals on 19 shots.

2011 draftee Ryan Dzingel, who scored 17 goals for Binghamton (AHL) last season, had the empty-netter and also added two assists for Ottawa.

Quick hits:

- You have to like what you saw from Evander Kane, who scored both a power play and a shorthanded goal in 15 shot attempts (6 shots on goal). He showed a strong combination of speed and power, and you wouldn't know he recently had shoulder surgery.

- Sam Reinhart got some time quarterbacking the power play, and he looked comfortable doing it. On the minus side, he lost track of Mika Zibanejad on one of the Ottawa goals.

- The line of Evan Rodrigues, David Legwand and Jason Akeson had a rough night for Buffalo. They were all -3. Same for defensemen Chad Ruhwedel and Matt Donovan.

- I get the hype about 2015 51st overall pick Brendan Guhle, but don't read too much into Dan Bylsma's comment that there's an outside chance the young defenseman could make the team. He's not strong enough to win battles along the boards and hasn't been consistent, but he certainly looks like someone with the skills to be a future full-time NHL player.
