Sabres Moves Result In Slight Nudge From Vegas

Even with an improving and talented young team, the Sabres were the biggest longshot to win the 2017 Stanley Cup just a few weeks ago.
And while reasonable fans aren't expecting the team to be a serious contender for a championship this upcoming season, it's interesting that what Buffalo has done to its roster in recent weeks -- most noteworthy the signing of free agent Kyle Okposo and the acquisition of Dmitry Kulikov -- has vaulted them, for the first time in three years, out of the basement with Vegas bookmakers.
According to Bovada, the Sabres are a +5000 moneyline bet to win the Cup next season (if you bet $100 and they win it all, you get $5000). Long odds indeed, but they've leapfrogged Arizona, Carolina, Columbus and Vancouver and drawn even with Colorado, Calgary, Ottawa, Winnipeg and Toronto.
This means there are 20 teams with higher odds to win the Cup than Buffalo, unlike the past few years when all other 29 teams were rated higher.
The Penguins (+900) and Blackhawks (+950) are the favorites as of now. The Coyotes, Hurricanes, Blue Jackets and Canucks all share the worst odds at +6600.

The Atlantic Division has just become, IMO, the most competitive division in the NHL. EVERY team in the division made moves to get better.
