Buffalo Cruises Past New Jersey In Prospects Challenge

If tonight was any indication, glowing optimism about the Sabres farm system is justified.

Led by a top line of Jack Eichel, undrafted former Boston U teammate Evan Rodrigues, and 2013 3rd-round pick Nicholas Baptiste, the Sabres prospects crushed the New Jersey Devils kids 6-2.

In his first live competition as an NHL player facing opponents not wearing Sabres jerseys, Eichel had an impressive evening with an assist and a plus-2 rating.

But it was Baptiste who stole the show, playing the role of sniper with two goals and displaying a wicked shot.

Rodrigues was all over the ice and netted a goal with two assists.

Sam Reinhart saw some power play and penalty kill time, and scored with his team a man up in the third period. He clearly looked like someone who has worked on improving his skating.

Defenseman Brendan Guhle, a 2015 Sabres 2nd-round pick, had an assist and looked comfortable overall and saw time on the first power play unit.

Andrey Makarov played the first half of the game in goal and didn't let any get past him.

Highly touted Devils prospect Pavel Zacha had a rough night and was pointless with a minus-2 rating.

My three stars vote would be 1-Baptiste, 2-Rodrigues, 3-Makarov, honorable mention-Eichel, Guhle.

The Sabres prospects will face the Boston Bruins youngsters on Monday night at First Niagara Center.
