First Day Of Detroit’s Training Camp- Injury Report

Updated 2x at 4:35 PM: Just to update the status of Jerome Verrier and Darren Helm, who had an on-ice collision today.

George also tweeted Dan Cleary has a leg issue and is considered out for today.

Update: Here's a report from the Free Press's Helene St. James...

Speaking early afternoon, Wings coach Jeff Blashill said Helm was undergoing concussion protocol at a hospital, and estimated he would be out "a little while." Verrier has a broken leg.

The collision came during drills. "Unfortunately we weren't able to give the heads up soon enough," Blashill said. "Obviously that drill got messed up. We've done that drills lots, and haven't had that happen. It was unfortunate."

"It was really scary," Johan Franzen said. "The kid, he was in so much pain. I was feeling a little sick for a while. I hope they recover fast."

Helm was penned in to play left wing on a line with Brad Richards and Tomas Tatar.

"That's not something you want to see," Richards said. "It was pretty loud and not a good scene on the ice."

The Detroit News's Ted Kulfan...

A violent collision between Darren Helm and prospect Jerome Verrier during a drill forced Verrier to be taken off the ice on a stretcher. Both were taken to a local hospital.

Verrier was moving his arms and legs as he left the ice, and the Wings later reported that he had suffered a broken leg.

Helm momentarily lay on the ice, but gradually got on all his hands and knees, then stood and eventually skated off the ice under his own power.

Helm is undergoing concussion protocols. The Wings said his status is day to day, though Helm is expected to be out at least a few days.

The drill was a puck retrieval drill, and occurred almost 15 minutes into the start of the first practice of training camp.

Verrier, 21, is an undrafted free agent in this training camp. He completed his junior career with Quebec in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

And MLive's Ansar Khan:

Prospect Jerome Verrier suffered a broken right leg and forward Darren Helm is going through concussion protocol following their violent collision Friday during the first day of Detroit Red Wings training camp at Centre I.C.E. Arena, coach Jeff Blashill said.

Update #2: Here's more from the Free Press's Helene St. James:

How long Helm will be out remains to be seen.

"Concussions aren't like broken legs where you have one or you don't," general manager Ken Holland told the Free Press mid-afternoon.

"We are doing concussion protocol to protect Helm. If he is good tomorrow and better every day thereafter, it usually takes a week."

The collision came during drills. "Unfortunately we weren't able to give the heads up soon enough," head coach Jeff Blashill said.

"Obviously that drill got messed up. We've done that drill lots, and haven't had that happen. It was unfortunate."

This is only the beginning. There will be more injuries. Where there is a disaster, there is also an opportunity for someone to step up and take a spot. We have bucket loads of guys we know can play. And we also have bucket loads of prospects that we want to find out if they can play at this level. Be safe, but keep going.

I bet Cleary had a wheelchair accident with his leg getting from the locker room to the ice rink.

He signed his latest three contracts with a leg/knee issue. Same as Weiss, Cole… But they had different issues though. Someone is asleep at the “singing” wheel.

Is that like the singing bush?

Same as Weiss, Cole…

To be fair, Cole’s injury wasn’t an old one.  He was healthy when the Wings acquired him.

Bad news for Helm…depending on the seriousness of the concussion, maybe great news for AA.

Great news that Cleary signed his deal without needing to go through a physical or anything. What a disaster.

Maybe the Wings can just throw him on IR all season so he gets paid and doesn’t impact the roster at all…best case scenario.

Yeah, it’s made of dust.

Cole’s injury dates from 2006. “On March 4, 2006, Cole suffered a fractured vertebra in his neck after getting hit by Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik”. (source: Wiki)

I thought everyone remembered that episode. It was shown ad neaseum on TV. I couldn’t watch without cringing. t was a miracle he came back but he never was the same Cole after that. HIs March 24, 2015 spinal contusion is a direct extention of that old injury.

But, you are right. He was traded for, not signed.

I made my point poorly.  It goes back to an old injury,  but not in the same way that a player with back problem can just have their back flair up just because he sits awkwardly.  Cole recovered from that injury and was basically healthy for the better part of a decade and it was reaggravated by a hit, it was not something that could have been easily predicted when he was acquired.

So, Franzen got a concussion by just watching the collision from the bench.
Not a good start to the camp for Blashill.
