Ex-Sharks on the move, minor grudge match tonight

Some ex-Worcester Shuttle frequent flyers have been on the move lately, and for some reason this is as interesting to me as pre-game thoughts about the Sharks in Anaheim.  I have only one thought about tonight's game: the Sharks need to avenge that near loss they suffered at home on the 29th.  I just hope it isn't with a near win like the Ducks got.  Something on the order of a regulation win would be better.

Reports say Greiss will start, and Boyle missed the morning skate again due to lingering flu symptoms:

@PollakOnSharks: McLellan says Boyle missed practice because of flu symptoms, but should play. Note: #SJSharks coach said same when teams met 1/29. Hmm.
@PollakOnSharks: To be precise (and fair),  #SJSharks McLellan said of Boyle that he "antcipates him playing."

Precise and fair it is.  I did wonder if playing while sick or after just being sick would be a bad idea.  I'll dwell on how perfectly rational that explanation is instead of getting all worked up about it.  Right.

The Ducks are probably starting their backup goalie too:

@icemancometh: Looking like Viktor Fasth against San Jose. Gets the nod over Jonas Hiller for third NHL start.

I am still scratching my head about why Fasth's name is so familiar to me.  Maybe I just saw his name on my Twitter feed a lot during the lockout.  He seems like an interesting case, to be playing his first season in North America at 30.  There's also a possibility that we'll see Brad Staubitz in the Ducks' lineup.

Speaking of ex-Sharks, which is what I wanted to do in the first place: as you probably know, Frazer McLaren was claimed by the Toronto Maple Leafs when the Sharks waived him on January 20.  He's only played one game with the Leafs since then but has not been assigned to the AHL Marlies either.  There was some brief confusion over whether or not he fought in that one game, because Mark Fraser did fight, twice.  So no, McLaren didn't fight in his first appearance with the Maple Leafs.

Brandon Mashinter was traded to the New York Rangers back on January 16th for Tommy Grant.  Both players were immediately assigned to their respective AHL affiliates.  Mashinter played 8 games with the Connecticut Whale, earning 7 points including 3 goals.  Today,  Mashinter was recalled by the Rangers.  Best of luck to him.

In the same period, Tommy Grant has played 6 games for Worcester, and earned a goal and an assist.  Don't be too hard on him though, there seem to be some insidious scoring problems in Worcester lately.

Benn Ferriero, scorer of game winning goals but not enough other goals for the Sharks, was signed by the Penguins last summer.  He played 34 games for their AHL affiliate before being traded to the Rangers on January 24.  The next day, he played a game with the Connecticut Whale and earned an assist.  The day after that, he made his debut with the Rangers and had 12:24 in ice time.  He earned an assist in his second game of four with the Rangers before being sent down to the Whale today.  I would think Ferriero for Mashinter was a strange swap, except that the Rangers also traded Mike Rupp for Darroll Powe today, so obviously they are doing more than moving AHL players around.  Busy busy Rangers.

About Petshark: Talking Stick

Native of Northern California.  Hockey fan since 1998... sort of... there's a hiatus in there that I still can't explain.

I want to know about anything and everything related to the sport and the spectacle.  I watch, I react, I write it down.

My interest in the Sharks was initially a matter of geographic convenience and regional loyalty because that seemed to be how it worked.  I had no prior interest (at all-- AT ALL) in professional sports of any kind.  When I met hockey, it might have set off a chain reaction of general sports fandom.  It hasn't, I don't think it will.  At all.

Since then, that interest developed into full blown (mostly sort of usually almost completely) exclusive loyalty to the Sharks.

I started blogging a couple years ago on wordpress. I still occasionally put things there that I don't think fit here because they are not about the Sharks. Wherever my words wander, here on Kuklas Korner, they will (usually) hang on to a teal thread.
