AHL/ECHL Monday Mentions, March 4

The Worcester Sharks had a lukewarm weekend.   Perhaps it was closer to tepid.  They lost two of three games in three days.  Friday they played at Providence, scoring first but losing 3-1.  That first goal was a short handed tally by Marek Viendensky, at 19:15 of the second period.  It held up until the mid-point of the third period when the Bruins tied the game.  The Bruins scored two more in the last three minutes of the third, including an empty netter.  The final SOG count was 23-19 Bruins, Alex Stalock made 20 saves.

3/1/13 scores & saves:
Worcester: Marek Viedensky(2)(SHG).  Alex Stalock made 20 saves for the Sharks.  The Sharks power play went 0/4, their penalty kill 5/6.
Providence: Kyle MacKinnon(10)(PPG, Tardif, Cunningham), Alden Hirschfeld(3), Trent Whitfield(5)(ENG, Hanson, Exelby)

Saturday the Sharks defeated Portland, riding a late first period goal from Sebastian Stalberg through overtime into a shootout.  The Sharks were outshot 38-33, but Harri Sateri came through for them.  Sateri was perfect in the shootout. Marek Viedensky scored the only shootout goal against Portland's Chad Johnson.

3/2/13 scores & saves:
Worcester: Sebastian Stalberg(8)(PPG, Comrie, Tennyson).  Harri Sateri made 37 saves in regulation and overtime.  The Sharks power play was 1/4, their penalty kill 5/5.
Portland: Phil Lane(8)(Dziurzynski, Martinook) Chad Johnson made 31 saves for the Pirates.

Sunday, the Sharks outshot Springfield but still lost 2-0.  Bracken Kearns didn't play, because he had been recalled by the San Jose Sharks:

@210Darryl:...Kearns the best player available right now...if Brodie Reid wasn't injured it might have been him recalled.

That could account for how the Sharks might lose to a team that only got 19 shots on net, while the Sharks got credit for 30. Also relevant, Curtis McElhinney was in goal for Springfield. He probably tipped the scales against Worcester.

3/3/13 scores & saves:
Springfield: Ryan Russell(6)(Audy-Marchessault, Collins), Tomas Kubalik(14)(Chaput).  Curtis McElhinney made 30 saves for the win.
Worcester: Harri Sateri made 17 saves for the Sharks.  The Sharks power play was 0/5, their penalty kill 3/3.

The Sharks' AHL team seems to be laboring under the same bug the NHL team has had lately:

@Jon_Allred: A team isn't going to win many games when their offense scores 2goals or less in 28-of-55 gms. Stalock + Sateri need goal support. #WorSharks

If the Worcester Sharks would adjust their drills as San Jose has done, perhaps it will clear up soon.

The Sharks next play on Saturday, March 9th at home against the Providence Bruins, 4:00 PST.  Listen on WTAG or watch on AHL Live.

The Bulls didn't have a better week than the Woo Sharks. They played four games since last Monday, but only won one. Tuesday, they lost 2-1 to the Utah Grizzlies in Yanni Gourde's first game with the team.

2/26/13 scores & saves:
San Francisco: scored by Dean Ouellet(24)(Gourde, Sivak). Taylor Nelson made 40 saves for the Bulls. The Bulls power play was 0/2, their penalty kill 3/4.
Utah: Patterson(4)(PPG Falite, Tuzzolino), and Patterson(5)(Estoclet, Lee). Adam Morrison made 24 saves for the win.

Wednesday, the Bulls played in Colorado after same day travel, but still pulled off a shootout win in a game that they tied four times. It was just the sort of bizarro result that shootout haters hate. The Bulls never trailed by more than one goal but they did trail four times. So that was exciting.

2/27/13 scores & saves:
San Francisco: Bryan Cameron(17) (D. Ouellet, Gourde), Christian Ouellet(13)(SHG), Simon Danis-Pepin(3)(Langdon, Ouellet), and Peter Sivak(27)(Morrison). Thomas Heemskerk made 35 saves and stopped five of five shots in the shootout for the win. The Bulls’ power play went 0/4, their penalty kill was 3/4.
Colorado: Steve Haddon(7)(Bowman, Kaunisto), Trent Daavettila(16)(PPG, Bidwill, Ulanski), Collin Bowman(7)(Ulanski, Strueby), and Kyle Ostrow(4)(Hau, Forney). Kyle Jones made 28 saves for the Eagles.

The Bulls next traveled to Las Vegas, where they lost both Friday and Sunday's games, 2-1 and 6-2 respectively. As a result of a hit during Friday's game, defenseman Mikael Tam was suspended for one game so he didn't play Sunday.

3/1/13 scores and saves:
Las Vegas: Sean Wiles(20)(PPG, Fritsch, Pitt), Adam Hughesman(11)(PPG, Lampe, Cook). Joe Fallon made 21 saves for the win.
San Francisco: Yanni Gourde(1)(SHG, C Ouellet). Thomas Heemskerk made 22 saves for the Bulls. The Bulls’ power play went 0/4, their penalty kill 4/6.

3/3/13 scores and saves:
Las Vegas: Scott Pitt(11)(Sarauer, Wiles), Jamie Fritsch(3)(PPG, Pitt, Sarauer), Sean Wiles(22)(PPG, Sarauer, Pitt), Chris Francis(18)(Pitt, Lampe), Wiles(23)(Sarauer, Boe), Francis(19)(Finucci). Joe Fallon made 26 saves for the win.
San Francisco: Dylan King(20)(Cameron, Clendenning), Simon Danis-Pepin(4)(D Ouellet, Sivak). Taylor Nelson made seven saves and Thomas Heemskerk made 33 saves. The Bulls’ power play went 0/4, their penalty kill 6/8.

The Bulls' next game will be Wednesday night at the Cow Palace where they kick off a three game series against the Alaska Aces.  Listen at KNBR or watch on America Ones Sports.

Up, down and all around

As mentioned above, Worcester's Bracken Kearns was called up by San Jose yesterday.  This morning, he started practice in a top six jersey but finished in bottom six teal.  Who knows what that means, but it certainly doesn't say much for the team's confidence in their existing bottom six to step into a top six role.  Ryane Clowe and Scott Gomez also did some on-ice costume changes, so nothing is certain about where or if Kearns will play on the Sharks' road trip.

Yanni Gourde was sent to the Bulls from Worcester early last week.  He already has a fight, a goal and two assists as a Bull.  He's fitting right in.

The Bulls released Colin Reddin at the same time that Gourde was sent down, and Bulls' forward Kris Belan was called up by the AHL's Manchester Monarchs last Monday:

@k_belan43: Would like to thank everybody for all the support!! #excitingtime

Bulls' GM Pat Curcio hasn't traded Belan's rights-- yet. If the Monarchs don't keep him, he will come back to San Francisco.

As if we didn't know it by now, the Toronto Maple Leafs really like Frazer McLaren. He scores, he fights, he gets kicked out of the hotel... in the best possible way:

@PollakOnSharks: First, TOR told ex-#SJShark Frazer McLaren to move out of hotel and into his own place. Now they traded Mike Brown to emphasize the point.

I guess they're gonna keep him.

About Petshark: Talking Stick

Native of Northern California.  Hockey fan since 1998... sort of... there's a hiatus in there that I still can't explain.

I want to know about anything and everything related to the sport and the spectacle.  I watch, I react, I write it down.

My interest in the Sharks was initially a matter of geographic convenience and regional loyalty because that seemed to be how it worked.  I had no prior interest (at all-- AT ALL) in professional sports of any kind.  When I met hockey, it might have set off a chain reaction of general sports fandom.  It hasn't, I don't think it will.  At all.

Since then, that interest developed into full blown (mostly sort of usually almost completely) exclusive loyalty to the Sharks.

I started blogging a couple years ago on wordpress. I still occasionally put things there that I don't think fit here because they are not about the Sharks. Wherever my words wander, here on Kuklas Korner, they will (usually) hang on to a teal thread.
