Off To Buffalo

02/11/2020 at 6:45pm EST

Since we're all feeling pretty good after downing the Bruins Sunday, on national TV no less, it's back to Earth for the 19, and off to Buffalo. We all know Bernier was the main reason for the win, and we'll take it, because it just sucks to watch so much losing. Also, there is another reason to still feel slightly optimistic. The return of Mantha, because he can be an absolute beast, and, a pleasure to watch when he's healthy. So there's that, and, that's about it......

KK- I Thought I Was Improving

02/11/2020 at 8:44am EST

But no, still not well enough to follow the news in the hockey world.

I felt pretty good for an hour or so, good enough to post a few items.

But right after I did, boom, I felt terrible again.

Will return when able.

Video- Notes Of The Day

02/10/2020 at 6:28pm EST

Still sick, very sensitive to noise, so please keep the noise level down.

Some topics you may have missed today.

(Edmonton, AB) - The Edmonton Oilers have signed defenceman and alternate captain Darnell Nurse to a two-year contract extension through the 2021-22 season.

Nurse, 25, has appeared in 55 games with the Oilers this season, posting 24 points (4G, 20A), 44 penalty minutes and a -2 plus/minus rating. He ranks second among Oilers defencemen in points (24), time on ice (22:46) and second on the team in hits (129) and blocked shots (101).

aav is $5.6M.

from Frank Seravalli of TSN,

According to HockeyViz, there is a 99 per cent chance the Bay Area is home to no man’s land this spring – a 99 per cent shot that the Sharks will both miss the Stanley Cup playoffs and miss out on the Draft Lottery, since the Ottawa Senators hold their unprotected pick from the Erik Karlsson trade.

That raises all sorts of questions about the Sharks’ roster.

The biggest one: Will Joe Thornton raise his hand and ask to chase a Stanley Cup elsewhere?

The 40-year-old future Hall of Famer is one of 13 intriguing new names added to the TSN Trade Bait board on Monday, including teammates Patrick Marleau and Barclay Goodrow.

Make no mistake: This will be Thornton’s call – and not only because Thornton holds the full no-move clause hammer. After 1,089 games in a Sharks uniform, it’s unlikely that GM Doug Wilson would go to Thornton asking him to consider a certain trade scenario.

KK- Still ill

02/10/2020 at 4:40am EST

I've been up half the as the nasal congestion, watery eyes and overall body sourness continues.

I feel worse today than yesterday but hoping improvement begins later today.

So I need to take it easy until I can actually focus on my monitor and keyboard.

I will get back at it as soon as I can.

NHL Short Notes

* Kyle Connor collected at least three points for the second time in as many days and the Jets scored five goals for the second time in as many days to improve to 4-0-1 in their last five games.

* Igor Shesterkin turned aside 42 shots and became the fourth goaltender since 1955-56 (since shots on goal officially began being tracked) to register multiple 40-save wins through his first six career contests.

* Nathan MacKinnon, Gabriel Landeskog and Cale Makar helped the Avalanche outlast the Wild in a five-goal second period and move within three points of the Blues for first in the Western Conference.

Quick Recap- Wings/Bruins

Final Score- Detroit Red Wings 3 Boston Bruins 1

One of the best games the Wings played this season, Bernier was fantastic.

I am literally having issues even focusing on the computer monitor, let alone try to comprehend what I am even typing.

Flu/cold combo is awful so with that Detroit goals and stats below.

Post-game talk post is 50/50 at this point, even typing is a chore right now.

Get Ready

02/09/2020 at 12:15pm EST

There's not much to say here except, get ready to be embarrassed nationally. As this season drags on it becomes increasingly difficult to find the right words to continually talk about losing. Although I'm sure the correct words will be spoken in the post game interviews. Until then....

THREE HARD LAPS

* Patrik Laine scored three power-play goals to register his eighth career hat trick and get the 20th Hockey Day in Canada off to a flying start.

* Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid became the first set of teammates with 30 goals and 80 points through their team’s first 55 games since Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr in 1996-97.

* Nikita Kucherov and Steven Stamkos each extended the League’s longest active point streak to 10 games. Kucherov became the fifth different player in the last 30 years to post at least five point streaks of 10-plus games over a three-season span.

We Soon Could See A Hockey Stick Shortage

02/09/2020 at 12:07am EST

from Matt Porter of the Boston Globe,

The infectious disease that has stifled life in China has ripple effects for National Hockey League players.

The highly customized sticks used by some 75 percent of the NHL are made in small batches at Chinese factories. With work and travel halted in that country since late January as the country combats an outbreak of coronavirus, the NHL has been unable to get fresh stock in the middle of its competitive season.

During Thursday’s Sabres-Red Wings broadcast, NBC Sports analyst Pierre Maguire said equipment managers told him there was a “major shortage” of sticks.

Hockey manufacturers disputed that, but conceded they are worried.

Bauer, headquartered in Exeter, N.H., makes its pro sticks in China, as does its main competitor, Montreal-based CCM.

Video- Jeremy Lauzon Will Have A Hearing Tomorrow

02/08/2020 at 9:02pm EST

via NHL.com,

Jeremy Lauzon will have a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Sunday.

The Boston Bruins defenseman is facing discipline for an illegal check to the head against Arizona Coyotes forward Derek Stepan on Saturday.

The incident occurred at 19:34 of the first period in Boston's 4-2 win at TD Garden. Lauzon received a match penalty for an illegal check to the head at 19:39. Stepan remained in the game.

The following grounds are being considered for supplemental discipline: illegal check to the head. However, the Department of Player Safety retains the right to make adjustments to the infraction upon review.

Saturday Headlines

02/08/2020 at 8:57pm EST

The panel discussed- Elliotte Friedman with some positive news on Olympic participation, trade talk on potential UFAs, plus wrist guards may become mandatory after some recent injuries.

I will post the video when available, meantime...

via Elliotte Friedman tweets,

As just mentioned on Headlines, the IOC and IIHF indicated a willingness this week to address NHL issues to get players to go to 2022 Olympics. This includes insurance costs, travel costs and ability to promote on own platforms (1/x)...

This is a significant policy change and a reversal from what had been indicated months earlier. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly told http://NHL.com that the league still wants to tie Olympic participation into CBA talks (2/x)...

But NHLPA feels it shouldn’t be a factor because the current CBA extends past the 2022 Games. (Both sides need to agree.) There are talks this week, but this is a pretty big development.

Hockey Topics Today

02/08/2020 at 3:30pm EST

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

- ...The Leafs are getting the right kind of offence from their high-priced forwards most nights. What they need now is more structure, a tighter defensive setup, fewer turnovers and with new goalie Jack Campbell, or anyone else, sharper goaltending.

The big salaries will buy flash: To date, in a record-breaking season for many, they haven’t bought nearly enough wins.

- This is Terry Pegula’s ninth full season owning the Buffalo Sabres. He’s had three different general managers and six different coaches and they have yet to make the playoffs and worse than that, the culture around the club is rather rancid.

There Is Hope

02/08/2020 at 1:22pm EST

from Sam McCaig of The Hockey News,

This season has been a dark one for Detroit, the darkest since the days of the ‘Dead Things.’ But don’t despair, Hockeytown, there’s at least 10 reasons to be hopeful for the future:

1. Steve Yzerman. The biggest reason for optimism is the return of the franchise legend, this time as GM. Yzerman, in his first year back in Detroit after nearly a decade as Tampa Bay’s GM, built a powerhouse with the Lightning and now he’s charged with resurrecting the Red Wings. He’s been loath to make any significant moves this season, choosing instead to accept the team’s last-place fate and evaluate the on-ice personnel is the process. Yzerman’s only notable acquisition was Robby Fabbri from St. Louis in November, with Jacob de la Rose going to the Blues. Fabbri has 11 goals and 27 points since the trade, de la Rose has one goal and five points. A few more moves like that, please....

3. Filip Zadina. The No. 6 overall pick in the 2018 draft gained instant notoriety for his brash prediction that he’d punish the teams that had passed on him by “filling their nets with pucks.” Then he had a decent-but-not-great 2018-19 season in the AHL, causing some to wonder if he might be more talk than action. But he got off to a better start with Grand Rapids this year and was called up to Detroit in late November, and he was a regular in the lineup until being felled by a week-to-week injury in early February. He was showing off his net-filling potential, too, with eight goals (and 15 points) in 28 NHL games. Zadina has a big shot, big skill and big confidence. And at 20 years old, the Wings are betting big that he’ll be a goal-scoring pillar for a future contender.

What Were The Arizona Coyotes Thinking?

02/08/2020 at 10:25am EST

Each violation can carry a fine of $250,000 or more. Club management and amateur scouts around the league are anxiously awaiting the outcome and commissioner Bettman’s ruling. No timeline on when a decision will be reached.

NHL Short Notes

02/08/2020 at 1:14am EST

THREE HARD LAPS

* Elvis Merzlikins blanked an opponent for a second straight game to extend his win streak to eight contests – a run which includes a League-leading five shutouts, including two instances of them being earned in consecutive fashion.

* The Maple Leafs and Wild scored game-winning goals in the dying seconds of overtime and regulation, respectively.

* Yellowknife, N.W.T. is set to host the 20th edition of Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada, which will feature all seven Canadian NHL teams in action
