A Friday To Remember For Cole Caufield

04/10/2021 at 11:28am EDT

from Stu Cowan of the Montreal Gazette,

Cole Caufield was already trending on Twitter in Canada early Friday night.

Part of the reason was the Canadiens’ top prospect was named the Hobey Baker Award winner as the top player in U.S. college hockey. About 30 minutes after that announcement, Caufield made his pro debut with the AHL’s Laval Rocket in Toronto against the Marlies.

The fact a 20-year-old who has yet to play a game in the NHL was trending is a sign of just how excited Canadiens fans are about Caufield. The game was also televised on RDS and broadcast on TSN 690 Radio.

Caufield didn’t disappoint, scoring two goals — including the winner — and adding an assist in a 5-3 Rocket victory.

Caufield’s first goal came at 1:28 of the second period with a one-timer blast on the power play from the faceoff circle to the right of Marlies goalie Joseph Woll. His second goal at 9:43 of the third period came after streaking down the left side, taking a shot and then roofing his rebound.

A Torn Tricep Is What Bobby Ryan Is Dealing With

04/10/2021 at 10:28am EDT

”from Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun,

Three days before the NHL trade deadline, the Detroit Red Wings announced that the 34-year-old winger is done for the season with an “upper body” injury.

And no, it’s not another broken finger.

While Ryan has been dealing with back issues, putting him on the shelf is a torn triceps that require surgery.

The second overall pick in 2005 (behind Sidney Crosby) should be ready to get back at it in plenty of time for next season, but in what jersey — or even if there will be one offered him — he does not know.

His deal with the Red Wings was for one year.

“Obviously gutted the way things ended prematurely this season for myself,” Ryan, who hasn’t played since March 28, told Postmedia on Friday. “I was hoping to put things off until the season ended, but no way around surgery, so now my focus shifts to getting healthy and seeing what’s next.

“Whether it’s another year in the league or not, my goals don’t change … get healthy, get stronger and see if there’s an opportunity to go back to work.

The Toronto Maple Leafs Go Outside The Box Acquiring An Injured Riley Nash

04/10/2021 at 10:09am EDT

from Chris Johnston of Sportsnet,

The only real question now is whether Frederik Andersen will be healthy enough to play another game for the Toronto Maple Leafs before the end of the regular season.

If he’s sidelined until the playoffs, Friday’s creative cap-bending maneuver to acquire depth forward Riley Nash while triggering the long-term injury provision signalled that Kyle Dubas has roughly $5-million in space to play with heading into the trade deadline.

However, should Andersen return from a lower-body injury the team has declined to place a timeline on before May 11, what they accomplished in the trade with Columbus was adding a veteran centre without any impact on their cap position because Nash is out four to six weeks with a knee sprain.

Either way it’s an outside-the-box approach to acquiring an asset while balancing a challenging cap situation -- something Toronto has become known for under assistant general manager Brandon Pridham.

What this deal ultimately tells us about the Leafs hinges entirely on Andersen’s health. He hasn’t been on the ice since a loss to Calgary on March 19 and isn’t expected to join the team for practice before Monday’s 3 p.m. trade deadline passes.

Nemeth, 29, is in his second campaign with the Red Wings and has tallied eight points (2g/6a) this season, ranking third among Detroit blueliners in points and average time on ice (18:24). He is second on the club and first among Red Wings defenders in average shorthanded time on ice (2:09).

Zach Werenski Out For The Rest Of The Season

04/09/2021 at 3:00pm EDT

via the Columbus Blue Jackets,

The Columbus Blue Jackets have placed defenseman Zach Werenski on Injured Reserve due to an inguinal/sports hernia, club General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen announced today.

He is expected to undergo surgery next week to repair the injury and will miss the remainder of the 2020-21 season. Werenski, 23, has collected seven goals and 13 assists for 20 points and 13 penalty minutes in 35 games this season, leading club defensemen in goals and ranking second in points. He also ranks second on the club in averaging 24:22 TOI per game.

"Zach has been playing through the injury for most of the season and as much as we would like to have him in the lineup, having the surgery now is the right decision and will allow him to be 100 percent before the start of training camp in the fall," said Kekalainen.

Trade Deadline Options For The Toronto Maple Leafs

04/09/2021 at 10:46am EDT

from Luke Fox of Sportsnet,

Seeking a versatile, responsible 3C like Philadelphia’s Scott Laughton, Columbus’s Nick Foligno, or Detroit’s Luke Glendening is one route.

Another is pursuing a winger like Buffalo’s Taylor Hall, St. Louis’s Mike Hoffman or Jaden Schwartz, Anaheim’s Rickard Rakell, or Nashville’s Mikael Granlund, Erik Haula or — the massive play — Filip Forsberg.

On the back end, Nashville’s cap-friendly Mattias Ekholm is the crown jewel of the trade-bait board — but his suitors will be plentiful, and Nashville’s recent standings surge will give GM David Poile pause whether to sell at all. (Our take: He should sell regardless… but our job isn’t on the line.)

Smart depth options include Columbus’s David Savard, Buffalo’s Brandon Montour or Colin Miller, Detroit’s Marc Staal, and New Jersey’s Dmitry Kulikov.

Savard and Staal are the fearless, shot-blocking, penalty-killing types Toronto could use. The Leafs’ inconsistent PK has climbed to 18th overall (78.5 per cent).

Any deal Dubas makes will require creative cap management and likely some salary retention by the rebuilding team or a third party (Chicago is willing).

NHL Short Notes

THREE HARD LAPS

* Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin and Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello moved into sole possession of second place on all-time NHL lists.

* The Hurricanes blanked the Panthers to leapfrog them for first place in the Discover Central Division, while Tampa Bay and Nashville also earned wins to keep pace.

* All eight Honda West Division teams are in action tonight, including the Blues and Wild who will square off in their first of seven head-to-head games scheduled over the next 23 days.

Another Bad Loss

04/09/2021 at 12:54am EDT

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

The Red Wings have played better for several weeks now, since being routed in Nashville on March 25, exactly two weeks ago.

The Wings had looked better defensively and didn't have many bad stretches within the game. They were playing smart hockey and weren't letting deficits spiral out of control when they were trailing.

But Thursday at Little Caesars Arena, the Predators routed the Wings again.

All the Wings' bad habits resurfaced Thursday in a game that gradually turned into a rout — a 7-1 Nashville victory, the identical score as the March 25 rout in Nashville.

Evidently, there are lessons still to be learned. Although it is getting frustrating that these types of ugly losses continue to pop up after the Wings seemingly begin to take positive steps forward.

"How many more times are we going to have to do this?" said forward Luke Glendening, of the Wings' growing pains. "We're all frustrated with it. I'm just as much to blame as anyone. I'm not pointing fingers, but how many more times are we going to have to do this before enough is enough?"

Defensive breakdowns, leaving too many Nashville players in prime positions to score, and not enough offense led to the Wings' undoing. Add those things up, and the Wings (13-23-6), who for all the better hockey, have still only won one game in the last six (1-3-2).

Not Too Bad

04/08/2021 at 6:59pm EDT

I think it's safe to say that the Wings play of late has been much more watchable. Not too bad actually. They're not winning them all, but, the effort is there, which makes for better play all around. Maybe, as we wind down the rest of the season, we'll get back to some degree of enjoying Red Wings Hockey. I'm all in.

Stepping Up

04/08/2021 at 2:53pm EDT

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

They were separate incidents, although similar in nature, and both showed a positive development regarding this Red Wings team.

There is a bond, a tightness, a willingness to stick up for a teammate.

And in the world of professional hockey, that is something important.

The first incident occurred against the Florida Panthers on April 1. In that game, Panthers defenseman Riley Stillman leveled Dylan Larkin with a hard hit, there was no call, and Stillman escaped unscathed the final few remaining minutes of the second period.

But beginning the third, Givani Smith sought out Stillman and challenged Stillman to a fight, drawing universal praise among the Wings afterward.

“It’s a testament to who Smitty is,” forward Luke Glendening said. “To be step in there, after he (Smith) had already fought (earlier in the game), and stand up for Larks, stand up for a teammate, it’s a testament to who Smitty is.

Said coach Jeff Blashill: “That’s stepping up big time, sticking up for your teammate.”

The Frozen Four Starts Today

04/08/2021 at 10:23am EDT

from Chris Peters of Hockey Sense,

Against all odds, the season is going to come to a relatively natural conclusion in the most unnatural of seasons (we expect). The semifinals for the 2021 Men’s Frozen Four are set for Thursday in Pittsburgh, with Minnesota State taking on St. Cloud State in the early game at 5 p.m. ET on ESPN2 and UMass meeting two-time defending national champion Minnesota Duluth in the night cap with a 9 p.m. ET puck drop, also on ESPN2. The championship will be decided Saturday at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Thanks to the support of my paying subscribers, I’ll be in the building for the Men’s Frozen Four as I take my first out-of-town trip since starting this new venture. I plan to provide on-site coverage with analysis of each semifinal and the championship game. After that, it’s complete focus on the 2021 NHL Draft and tracking already-drafted prospects currently playing in junior, Europe and the AHL. My spring draft rankings are coming out this week, too. So, for those that have not yet signed up, if you’d like to support independent sports media and receive my instant, on-site Frozen Four coverage, draft rankings and more in your email inbox (or at least have access to read on the site), consider a subscription today. Thanks again to all of those who have already signed up, allowing me a chance to get to another Men’s Frozen Four.
