One way to look at this is that Washington has very little to benefit from making the playoffs and getting blown out by Boston or Carolina. Unlike Detroit, Ottawa and Buffalo, they already have playoff experience so just making the playoffs has little benefit. Washington is just getting head start on their offseason makeover.

A 1st, 2nd and 3rd for 30+ year-old rental. That's so Ken Holland. Orlov is a pretty good player and Boston is/should be all in. That said, Washington did very well here.

I don't think this necessarily means Washington is done but they are basically accepting they won't be buyers making a push to get among the elite Eastern Conference teams. They will likely still be in the race for wild card even though they may have minimal desire or inadequate skill to matchup against any playoff opponent.
